Not a fan of the fugly Smittybilt junk either, I can't wait to lose the eyesore on the nose of my truck!
As far as paint goes, when I rattle-canned my 40, I didn't prep much, and it turned out pebbly and blotchy, with some serious rough spots in places. This time, when I paint my pickup, I plan on doing things right, and sanding, and wet-sanding as much as possible.

The shade of your primer has an effect on the overall color, as well, I chose black primer under dark green paint to really give the green a final deeper note. I also used a lighter grey to "dust" between layers of primer to make sure everything got another coat, and I didn't overlook anything, it also exposes any runs, high-spots, or drips in the paint so you can smooth them out.
