Not a fan of the fugly Smittybilt junk either, I can't wait to lose the eyesore on the nose of my truck!

As far as paint goes, when I rattle-canned my 40, I didn't prep much, and it turned out pebbly and blotchy, with some serious rough spots in places. This time, when I paint my pickup, I plan on doing things right, and sanding, and wet-sanding as much as possible.

If you need some direction, Cruiser Enthuiser's got a great rattle-can thread:

Also, this page has some great info, too:

The shade of your primer has an effect on the overall color, as well, I chose black primer under dark green paint to really give the green a final deeper note. I also used a lighter grey to "dust" between layers of primer to make sure everything got another coat, and I didn't overlook anything, it also exposes any runs, high-spots, or drips in the paint so you can smooth them out.

thanks

Thank you. Thats a useful post CC. I got the bumper on and I am so relieved. The rear bumper is welded on, so I will see about that later. Here in these pics you can see all the rust and I am up against, you can also see better where the spring/shackle mounts were taken down a lot, compare to photos on page one. I am eager to get started on the sanding & painting.

I want to find a tool that I can attach a sander to and a wire wheel, I found the paint products mentioned in the link Chuck provided, I will do my best but I know it wont be pretty. I figure I can take on sections one at a time, sanding and priming, then later do a painting. I will probably go with white, beige or some kind of green. :hhmm:

UPDATE

So I am moving forward with the paint process. Today I got a Makita sander, and some silicon carbide disks, hoping 50 will do the job.

Now I need some primer and duplicolor.

Then after that I ordered the carpet for the cab and decided I would do it myself after visiting the upholstery shop. I will however have them make me a new vinyl shift boot.

So this is turning into a build more than a drop off and pick up, at least for the cosmetics...:D

you're lucky that the rust doesn't seem to be more than severe surface rust. Maybe two years wrenching on a 40 had warped my view of "rust" but what I've seen seems manageable.

Duplicolor's great stuff, too. I've used their bedliner-in-a-can and it seems to hold its own really well.

thanks

So I am not a good build photographer, but I do have some updates. I recieved my carpet kit that I found on the FAQ. Notice how NASTY! the old carpet was, this was the single most appreciated mod as far as the girlfriend is concerned.

For the record, despite the instructions I DID use the old carpet as a template to cut the new. Just to be safe I cut wide, but then I ended up going back and just re cutting everywhere I left extra. Unfortunately I did over cut on the shifter/tranny hump. There is a little 1/4 inch gap where it meets the frame for shifters.

I did this whole job on the street where I live. I endured a lot of looks from the neighborhood. It took about 6 hours, because I am new to this stuff, and I was trying to make things as perfect as possible..

Since last check in, I also sanded down the whole truck, except for the bed. I have two coats on it now (white Rustoleum primer). Just to get rid of all the rust and have a solid color of any sort looks a lot better. I will post pics in a day or less, gotta pull them off my phone. I am including one photo I took after one coat on the cab only.

Tomorrow I am going to prep the whole thing and paint it with the "Oregano" flavor Rustoleum:) I am thinking of maybe a cool stencil design just so people understand I don't take this paint job too seriously:D. Then I will probably just put some flat black on the bed right over the rust. The bed rust is pretty heavy and I am over sanding the nooks and crannies...

I suck at painting, its got bubbles and drip all over, but it looks way better I think despite the blems...

This looks great!!
y'see, just under that rust, and those rough areas, was a sweet, girlfriend-appeasing rig waiting to spread its wings! I look forward to whatever other progress you have lined up!

Dang, I missed the Stig.... I want a Stig sticker now!!!

Me too, I can't believe I overlooked that!

Yep I am finally going to PISMO! I will be going solo with Sue as my only co-pilot! Wave me down Chuck, are you going in the cruiser or the p/u?

I'll be there in The Mule, Phoenix is more or less parts right now (temporarily). I may be bringing Max, one of my Collies, along, if he can sit still long enough. Last time I gave him a ride, I kept "shifting" his snout...

Sue's a really nice looking dog, she seems to have a good deal of personality, too!

Awesome, the Mule in action! I am looking forward to it. I am having some belts replaced before the trip, and I need to get a whip, find my shovel and pack an overnight bag. I just finished watching a marathon of videos from pismo and I have to say this one takes the cake, I am thinking the special word for the trip is.... SAFETY!!:D. Down in ocotillo wells in the dunes there are always people drinking too much and driving to fast. That little hospital always gets busy on the holidays down there. So as a reminder to myself and anyone reading this, "Safety" is the word of the day.:steer:;) Not to get morbid sorry, it's just a reminder that short sighted people abound on this planet, and you got to be lively and smart as much as possible. Now that thats out of the way.......YEEEEEEE Haaaaaaa PISMO
