well....as soon as one thing gets fixed, something else goes
this time my fuel tank has started leaking....the rubber seal i guess where the sender sits is no good, and even though i gues i could techincally buy a new seal, it has always made me nervous having the gas tank right under the seat that my wife rides on so i wanted to move it anyways and lower the seats when it is gone.
so im considering picking up a fuel cell....but i dont know anything about them...all i know is its gotta be at least 15 gallons....and it has to work wih my 402 and a fuel guage that reads 33-240 ohms.
i found a few on ebay that i might be able to get for 75 and under....so that is what id like to spend since i still have to rebuild my sm420 and replace the seals and bearings on my front axle...not to mention new brake system....
anyways, can someone help me determine what i should look for? i see alot of them talk about foam and no foam and baffles...i know what the baffles do...but what is the foam for?
also...is it going to be difficult to track down the proper connectors i need or can i go to any good hydraulic/steel hose fitting outfit and get what i need?
lastly....im considering tucking it up in behind the rear axle...good idea or bad? right now thatis where m battery sits (no room under the hood with the big block) and since it is an optima i can mount int in any direction so that is movable....but reaslistically where else can i mount a 16-20 (im hoping to get a 20) gallon tank if under the seat is not an option?

pictures speak a thousand words here so if anyone has any sort of custom fuel supply set up, id really love to see it!
 
Have you thought of the aux fuel tank made for the FJ40? You could probably run that as your only tanl. I have seen them used for $75-$150 and new for about $550. They hold 22 Gallons. Do a search here and on google for FJ40 aux fuel tank and you will see what I am talking about.
 
I studied fuel cells quite a bit trying to find a solution for my 67 FJ45. My biggest issue was the fact that I had to have a way to fill the tank and I didn't like the idea of cutting the bed of the truck for a filler neck.

Summit Racing and Jegs have a pretty good selection and a variety of sizes and applications. I did look into JAZ fuel cells too but they are WAY expensive. Be careful what you buy because pump gas will break up the foam in racing fuel cells and get into the system (not good).

Most of the ones I looked at came with a 0-90 ohm sending unit for GM gauges and most had return fuel line and ports I would no have used.

I eventually caved and Herculined the exterior of my tank and use a Creme liner kit on the inside but that's a whole nuther story :D
 
I've got a 15 gallon RCI fuel cell, foam, bottom sump, rollover valve, aluminum, etc.

Mounted in the bed behind the seats...really, there is NO place to mount a cell other than in the bed, they just don't fit anywheres else.

(BTW: see my TBI350 install pics in the tech section, believe there are some photos there)

JIC/37 fittings are the same as the AN fittings on a cell, and MUCHO cheaper....

I've read that pump gas with cells is a problem, haven't had one yet, but do run a filter immedialtely after the pickup...I have read that a foam filled cell needs to remain full, since "drying" foam wil break down way quicker than soaked foam. Foam serves the same purpose as baffles...to control slosh. I ran the sumps to the back on mine, figgered starvation uphill was worse than starvation downhill....lol

I love mine...twin bottom outlets, one is for the return on my TBI. two top outlets, one is the rollover and vented, the other I caped, but it would oiptionally be the return. Sending units are extra on cells, and not cheap.

Mark is a member here, using the same "handle" of 65swb45, and he has a website where he sells LC related items, and LC parts, from Burbank, IIRC.

Not a customer of Mark's , no financial dealings with Mark, no dog in the fight...

I saw that too.

I've got the conn fer 22 gal aux steel tank. It needs a gauge and I hate how the po installed the filler tube. Doesn't hang too low either.

I was just considering taking out the factory tank and just keepin the aux, but I like havin 35 (about) gallons.
 
no sump = flat bottom = better odds you'll starve for fuel since there is no lowest point for it to end up...

BTW: avoid plastic cells...everyone I know who has them doesn't like them. Stick with the <bling> aluminum ones...
