Heads up. Potential for nasty storms tonight.

View attachment 1412091

Watching the storm roll in and the rain change back n forth with pea hail now from my house. I knew it was coming as I picked up my daughter at 12 PM, driving the dually with 1 ton traction block in the bed, and two things happened: body was shifting while sitting still and 2) had to drive with a slight angle on the steering wheel to avoid being blown into the next lane or off the road. Be safe everyone.

510 would probably have the best parts support.

A former boss vintage raced an alfa gtv back in the late 80s. it was cool as heck to look at, but 11k to rebuild the motor, 7k for a rear end, and body panels were unobtanium for it. he got tboned by a volkswagen 914 (porsche), at moroso motorsports park, and that pretty much did the car in.

There "used" to be an active Z club here in GSO, and while the club functions have slowed down the folks are still here, a couple of which have a 510 or surplus parts. @tgadd I have some names of contacts if you like.

Some general knowledge questions I need answered about the 1FZ motor if anyone can help, that would be great:

What sort of sensor(s) does it use to trigger the ignition? Variable reluctor (magnetic pickup)? Optical? Hall effect? Old fashioned mechanical breaker points? Are the sensors triggered by trigger wheels on the crankshaft / flywheel, distributor / cam, or both?

How many teeth / windows / slots and are on the crank or distributor trigger wheel? How are they arranged? (Equally spaced, missing teeth gaps, etc)

Does this engine have a fast idle valve (IAC)? If so, how many wires are connected to it? Do you know if it is an on/off, pulse width modulated, thermal, or stepper type?

Thanks folks!

Jeez, James.....Working on your ASE certification or maybe filling out the knowledge questionnaire to work @Trollhole 's?

stock 1FZ ignition uses a VR to send the trigger signal.

Your 1994 does not have a crank sensor, so ignition timing comes only from the distributor. (I don't know how many teeth).

You do have an IAC. # of wires ..... no idea.

If you're doing research for engine management hardware for your turbo it's also good to know your VAF (which is a resistor type, not a Karman vortex) has a fuel shutoff wire connected to the flapper door. When removing the VAF the fuel shutoff needs to be addressed.

Thanks - yeah, doing some research on potentially using the megasquirt.

Cool. If you report your findings on your "new 80 on 40's" thread others following your progress might be able to find it easier. Good luck.

3FE has the VR sensor in the dizzy. Here are the settings. You just need to have a peak at the dizzy and see if it's the same or not:

Looking at an online picture of the dizzy last night 24 teeth looked about right but I could not confirm.

Both very cool looking - but as someone that regularly drives a semi "stanced" ride (I have tein coilovers - but set relatively high)... DON'T DO IT.

Those cars look amazing standing still. But I bet they will make an FJ40 feel like a luxurious cushy ride.

Here are your IAC settings - took me a while to figure the wiring out and dial in the settings:
