Who can talk to me about bias tires? Looking to put a set of STA Superlug 900r16 (36"x10"x16"? on Charlotte, the International crew cab.

Citi driving with occasional highway but not concerned with going fast.

someone who used to work in the tire business ;)

Personally I wouldn't do it. Bias tires will wander more and if your older posts are any indication they may cause you to chase down handling characteristics that are just a result of 1960's suspension coupled with old tire tech. I've had bias on my cruiser before and they weren't terrible but that is because the suspension on the 80's are great. But when I went to radials it made a huge difference. Bias are great for an off-roading rig though.

If you are just doing it for the look they do make bias looking radial tires.

Bias tech never really changed that much, tires from the 30's that Capone was riding on are pretty much the same design as tires from the 60's that muscle cars raced stop light to stop light on. While radial tech changes by leaps and bounds every decade.

All in all you should be good though if you aren't really driving the thing much and don't mind them following all the lines and ruts in the road more than radials do. Also flat spots after not driving for a while until the tires warm up.

@lt1fire - I wouldn't be concerned with the wandering but the missus definitely will. The only radials I can find in that size is take off Michelin military tires, and a knock off Michelin made in China (Yellow Sea YS20). Both are significantly more expensive and have to ship from Canada

36x10?!!! That's a skinny damn tire man. Bias or radial...

What's on it now? And why the skinny? whats your rim width?

Edit: I say that based on my skinny 33's that are 10.5"

All depends on your expectations I suppose. I'm perfectly happy with the skinny-ass Columbian special bias plys on the 44.

They don't handle as well as radials ... It's an '81 Cruiser

They wander and follow any pavement grooves ...It's an '81 Cruiser

They aren't as good at high speed... It's an '81 Cruiser

They get flat spots if it's parked for more than a day so the ride is bumpy for the first ten minutes...It's an '81 Cruiser

Radials are better. There is no question about that. A Rubicon is more capable than a 40, but sometimes you've just gotta go with what you think is cool a f*** anyone else's opinions. And on that last note: skinny tires rule.

You guys won't impress me until you get some split rim tube tires and then drive them 30+ MPH over the recommended speed limits.

Guy local here has this truck that used to have 1100r16 (39x11x16). This is the look I want to go for. Though he swapped over Ford springs/axles for a lift and had to trim the fenders a bit. The 900r16s will fit without any mods.

New bias tires are available for $220/ea + free shipping.

Take-off military radials with 90%+ tread are available at $250/ea + shipping from Canada ($320 to freight terminal in CLT)

New China knock off radials are available for $259/ea + shipping from Canada

Currently have some 29" highway tires. Skinny because it looks good. Rim width is no clue, have to do some research what the stock; probably in the 5.5-7.5 range.

Don't get skinnies, that's what the camel trophy teams used and they don't know nothing about driving off-road.

Seriously though, the only Buckshots I have seen in real action is with Ken Piedrahita on his Disco. Like tactor tires he can crawl over amazing places most people fail, truly amazing. But on the highway they are so bad he is thinking about trailering his rig.

Don't let it seem like I hate the show though.

Their trip locations are epics and their camera shots and editing are up there with the top gear staff. The continuous shot edit from the start of this episode where he gets out of the truck and walks into the garage was top notch. I think that is what Clay did before starting expedition overland. And i'd join them for a trip at the drop of a hat.

I like mountain state overland also. Bold Overland is another good one. Neither of them have the shots/trips/or editing of expedition overland but also don't have the negatives that have been said about them.

I also really enjoy 4xoverland as he does trips all over the world and pretty good vehicle comparo's from an overland perspective.

I'll still watch these.

Feedback is important and I pass any I get up the chain. Either way, thanks for watching

Fwiw here are some dedicated Mud threads about Expedition Overland's Season 2 & 3:
Expedition Overland - 2015 Season on YouTube
Expedition Overland - Mackenzie Trail 2016 - On YouTube soon!

Anyone know if the expedition sevens team is ever going to release a DVD of their trip... all i've ever seen are 1 minute clips and the part of one of the expedition overland episode that covered a short leg of it.

The entire series can be seen on Vimeo: Videos - Expeditions7

There is far more footage and I hope to see the videos be expanded a bit in the future.

[/end hijack] :D

I don't know what the recommended limit is, but I DO have split rims, and I drive them as fast as that li'l 2B will spin'em.

Oh damn! I shouldn't be reading this when drinking coffee, now I got to clean the keyboard with all the coffee flying out of my mouth...

I like these in the 34x9x16...probably going to be my next set if the rock hard Columbian rubber ever wears out.

@lt1fire - what about recapped tires? I can get recapped radials for $230/ea.

Part of my job there was helping to run the retread plant (allthough this was truck and AG tires not passenger, I wouldn't have a clue as to what the industry standards are on passenger retreads), while retread tech has grown in leaps and bounds i'm personally still weary or using it on a passenger tire.

If you want to go that way i'd only do it on the rear tires and just remember the chance of zipper failures, blow outs, tread separation are all much higher with retreads.

But there are many that have had lots of success with the treadwrights out there.

You should be fine with them..... just know most everyone will ignore any bad handling on my international posts... LOL

Just kidding, that was my only reason for saying go with radials.... if the :princess: you might as well not like it right??
