Ive got an 85 4 runner that I have been fixing up to be a dd... for now anyway. It turns out that the po had a problem with the gauge, and replaced the sending unit with a switch style.

According to the FSM (thanks to the FAQ, and whoever pdf'd the FSM!) the wiring is good, the new sending unit is good, but the gauge is now bad. there is 11.5 v thru the gauge not 4.5 like the FSM indicates there should be, but the gauge coil still reads 44ohms like it should.

On the LCs (55s and 60s) the gauge cluster has a small relay/timer that spends its life switching on and off "regulating" (ha!) the average voltage down around 5v.

Has anyone fixed this problem on a 85 runner or truck? Is there a regulator in the combination meter? Or, has anyone taken the combination meter apart (and put it back together) with success?

Let the opinions fly. 5 minutes in a junk yard might be the answer.

Changing the sensor to the simple idiot-light switch is a perfect way to fry the gauge.

Personally, I wouldn't spend any time or money trying to fix it, the OEM dash gauge is very inaccurate. I would look to upgrade to an aftermarket AutoMeter mechanical gauge.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't had time to do much of anything yet. I'm in Texas for a while (yea!)

I'll look at it when I get a chance to. I have a panel from an 83 truck, that I could mount new gauges in... I may go that direction.
