Oil Filters

I guess my biggest reason for not being so concerned about my oil filter is this: an engine is just an open rotating mass of parts with oil getting thrown around everywhere inside of it. I can't even imagine how crazy the oil looks with the crank breaking through it at 2,700 RPM on the highway.

I figure most of your metal particles from the cylinder walls degrading, carbon deposits, and silicone dust enter the oil around the rings through blow-by. the life of an engine relies on the rings, cylinder walls, main bearings, and rod bearings......all right under this source of contamination. the filter picks up contaminates only after they fly around in the engine for a while.

does anyone else besides me think these "loose" particles probably amounts to more damage than the filtered oil pumped into the engine?

P.S. I didn't get the heater hose joke.

Oh god no... It has oil passages all throughout the block and almost every journal or bearing is constantly being fed by pressurized oil coming from the pump..

Constantly being sloshed around, it isn't...These parts are actually supported by a thin layer of oil. It can't just sit in an oil bath to remain lubricated after sling off. That would be windage.

Yes, loose particles the filter should be filtering...

An engine does have oil slinging off the crank and everywhere inside of it. it's why they have crank scr@pers and windage trays....that HELP to keep the oil down, but don't control it completely. you really think your crank magically runs dry after all that pumped in oil goes through the passages??? it pumps to the top of the motor only to flow back down by gravity.

why do you think the head has those oil return holes that just let the oil back into the engine......yup right to the crank, or in my chevy, right to the cam.

yes the bearings do run on a thin layer of oil, but they are not sealed to just that oil. ever re-build a motor?? you have to check rod clearance side to side. there is a lot of room for oil to get in there coming from other sources besides what the oil pump puts in.

[sigh]........I quit........

Today whilst at Repco I saw their Repco branded filter which says that it's made in Indonesia on its box. Which is what I expected, as back when I worked as a Mechanic(2000-2001), most filters were made in Indonesia even with the various brands. Also, earlier this year when I got to drive a Forklift, a Toyota, that had a Toyota filter fitted was made in Indonesia just as the Forklift was, even though the filter would of been changed many times in its life. :)

I actually went to Repco to get two 5 Litre bottles of Engine Oil, but the Repco SAE 15W/40 API CI-4 made by Mobil that I've been using that has a CI-4 Oil rating was priced at $29.95 each which makes it cost more than this Chevron product that is rated CI-4 Plus. So now I'm waiting for them to call me back so they can william my American Express.

On Tuesday I decided to telephone lubesonline.com.au then an hour later I got a phonecall back to william my Credit Card. It arrived at 8:30 on Thursday, coming from a suburb of Sydney. :grinpimp:

Today I went to Bayswater Truck Centre to pick up a Donaldson TopSpin I had ordered on the first of June, it wasn't in yet, but I did plan on getting something else, an Oil Filter, either P550008 or LFP550008. Another Donaldson product not in stock, but the chap crossreferenced the Filter to a LF3313, which was on my shortlist, but I didn't think Paccar would sell a competitors product being Cummins. The good news is that it costed me $6.30 which is so incredible cheap. :D The bad news is that Kilsyth is not particularly convenient to get to from Glen Waverley.
