I have an 1988 FJ62 with the original 3FE (165K mi.) that has a leak that appears to be coming from the oil cooler. From what I could see tonight, in the dark and with a flashlight, it is coming from the Bolt (not shown) that the oil cooler label in the diagram from the FSM is pointing at. I put a wrench on it to see if it just needed a tighten and it actually got worse. There is a chance that it is coming from the water hose/nipple connection to the right in this picture, I tightened that not even 1/8 of a turn, but it looked like it was the bolt.

Looking for any insights anyone can share.

PO replaced the water pump and I haven't had any cooling issues, although most of December was in the negative digits Fº and my daily drive is really short. I do wonder if the water pump went out because if it leaked here before and the pump ran dry. Until tonight, I hadn't seen any leaking, but my driveway is gravel so it might not have shown up. I did notice that the overflow bottle was also empty. Heater blows hot.

I replaced mine, it’s an easy fix. Disconnect both hoses and unscrew both bolts. Drain coolant first. Mostly the ports where both hoses are connected corrode.

If oil cooler is still ok, you might as well change the rear 0-Ring and front copper ring.

leaking coolant or oil?
leaking coolant, you can bypass the cooler until you get it fixed/replaced

Coolant for sure. Hadn't thought of bypassing. That at least will stop the leaking while parts come.

Buying a Land Cruiser and adding parts from China is kinda weird 🤙

You might check with Cruiser Outfitters if they are stocking these yet. This would save the faff of ordering from overseas.

Cheers, James
