I'm saying if you have sick 300,000 mile motor you should overhaul it instead of putting band-aids on it. If it is a good runner leave the sleeping dog alone.

Of course, mine runs well, I am not made of money and my grandpa used to say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", but in the event that it does need a rebuild, I am looking for advice as to what to look for when prospecting for a machine shop. I don't know a lathesmith from a donnybrook, so I would need the assurance that they knew what they are doing before I decide to make the several thousand dollar decision to rebuild.

When I rebuilt mine, I went around town and talked to several machine shops, and finally decided upon one that specialized in performance motors, but they said they would have no problem with a 1FZ. (There is really nothing special or complicated about this motor.) They did a good job, and did offer to do the assembly, which I opted to do myself. I imagine there are a couple of reputable shops in your area that could handle a rebore and assembly of your motor. I would ask around locally. With a competent shop you should be able to drop your long block off, let them do the work, and pick it up ready to drop back in your truck. They should supply the proper rebuild kit, but I would buy OEM from the vendors on this site. I ultimately decided on a shop because they were helpful, had a good reputation, and were eager to do the job. There are multiple threads on here that would be of help in pulling the motor, and if you can pull it, you can put it back in. My two cents, hope it helps.

I've tried all the different Stop Leak/Stop Smoke products, but the only thing that decreased oil consumption was going to a heavier weight engine oil (Mobil 1 10W-40 HM with a couple quarts of 15W-50 tossed in).

After seeing the carbon build-up in Snake Eater's engine, and knowing my 1FZFE likely has leaking valve seals also, I super-cleaned the combustion chambers using a mix of 50:50 distilled water and Isopropyl alcohol sucked in via the intake system. I had previously dumped in a triple dose of upper cylinder lube into the gas thinking it might provide a bit more top end lube during the cleaning procedure.

Followed that up with maybe a half a dozen large bottles of PEA containing gasoline additives, a couple got sucked in via the intake, the others I dumped in only 6-8 gallons of gas (one bottle with each 6-8 gals). I now use the PEA cleaners one bottle about every 1000 miles in the same (small) amount of gasoline. Engine is running great.

All that was just stop gap preventive maintenance ($100) until I pull the head, but as cruiserdan mentioned I'm not in a rush to pull apart a working engine.
