Doing my first oil change on my 2005 Land Cruiser.

Just bought my Land Cruiser about a month ago. Oil change was done at 86k miles. I am almost at 89k miles. I am going to be switching to full synthetic (Mobil 1 extended performance) to be exact. Conventional oil is currently in it which Ive read makes no difference as far as changing it.

Now I may be throwing away money and over thinking it but is it ok/ a good idea to drain it. Fill it with maybe 3 or 4 quarts of the new oil. Run the engine, then drain it again and then change the filter, washer, and fill it up with the entire synthetic oil. I think its the perfectionist in me that doesnt want any of the old oil in there.

You’re overthinking it. The engine won’t care.

Wait until the engine maintenance light comes on (every 5k), change the oil & filter and reset the light.
Edit: Warm the engine up first to get the most old oil out.

If you want an upgrade while you’re in there swap over to the larger M1 209a(?) oil filter and install a Fumoto valve to make future oil changes a breeze.

i swapped my Fumoto valve out for the Valvomax Quick oil drain valve (despite the fact that I just noticed that it's endorsed by Scotty Kilmer, yuck).

It drains faster than the Fumoto valve and doesn't drip on my Asfir skid plates as badly. Only downside is that you need to keep the adapter somewhere - I clean it with brake clean and keep it in the center console in a Ziploc baggie...

And the M1-209a oil filter adds a bit of extra oil capacity and a lot of filter area... Other options are the Mahle OC479 or the Mann 719/14

Maybe I am mis-reading but definitely don't run the motor with only 3-4 quarts of oil in it..... And it's totally not necessary to try and get all of a conventional oil out of the system before doing an oil change with synthetic....... Just change the oil to the synthetic and move on. If you want to do a little bit of above and beyond type of stuff just buy another 8 quarts and do another oil change ( no filter ) in a thousand miles or so..

Something to keep in mind that's sort of on that topic is to consider avoiding "high mileage" blended oil from Mobil as its been stated by manufacturer that if you use that oil, and then switch to something else, seals may weep

and if you want to take your crazy to the next level you can start sending oil off to Blackstone Labs every now and then to get some feedback on how its all doing

Ok ill probably just change it based on the feedback im getting. Also the Mobile 1 oil I bought was the extended performance. I specifically did not get the high mileage version.

Came across this video yesterday, which may be of interest if you really (really!) want to overthink things . . .
