How effective are the stock oil bath air filter assemblies? Is there a drop-in filter element I can use or would I have to change the entire set-up to a later style or just run what I have? Anyone else using the oil bath system?

Tony, VW used oil bath air cleaners for 30+ years and they never seem to die. It is actually a great air cleaner and easy to service. I would leave it as is, you could probably run an f engine without an air cleaner in a sand storm and not have a problem!! YT
Paper element was standard and the oil bath was an option in the early parts books. I think the oil bath is better just more to service than pulling the paper element out and putting a new one.
Mine leaked all over the side as the housing cracked where it bolted to the bracket, oil never really got dirty.. maybe the wrong oil maybe something was wrong..
The tin on the oil bath housings is very thin, and almost every oil bath air cleaner I've seen cracked right next to the mounting bracket. I think the extra weight of the wire mesh screen and the oil didn't help.
Dallas, I am also curious how you made a paper element fit that can, especially on the top. Since paper element air cleaners are not nearly as numerous as oil bath ones, knowing how to convert one is something everyone in this forum could benefit from.

I agree with Mark. While the parts books showed the oil bath as an option most early cruisers that came into the US had the oil bath. The two barrel are easy to find in paper element but the one barrels are hard to find. My 68 had the one barrel paper element. I think 68 is when Toyota started shipping the US with paper element air cleaners. That only lasted for the 68 model year until 3/69 when the two barrel started. So if someone knows how top convert the oil bath to paper it help us guys who love to run the old one barrels.
