What can I say? While I like my FJ73, the wagon bug has bitten me.

The repair on your cruiser is coming along really nice.

Again, I really can't thank you and Jim enough for helping me put that suspension on.

Thanks Matt... I’m always happy to help a fellow Cruiser Head whenever I can!

I used POR-15 extensively on my cruiser 10 years ago, and now I am back at the same spots. It actually rusted under the POR-15 and was kind of hidden under the paint and when it did surface it was pretty bad.

I can honestly say it's not worth it. The idea of painting rust and hoping it stays sealed is not real. The only fix is cutting out, welding it. Or using acid to get rid of it. Like was done with the rust here.

But save your money on the POR-15. AT least with rustoleum or such you can see it rusting.

Good point... I actually did cut and grind all the rust away. Then welded in clean metal. The POR 15 is going over clean rust free metal. Hopefully to seal and keep moisture away. Time will tell.

POR-15 doesn’t work so well on clean metal unless there is a pre-treat done to create flash rust. You are probably better off using encapsultor or using epoxy primer.

I actually forgot to mention that before I used the POR 15, I treated the metal with some phosphoric acid, using this product...

At least you are in Texas, so rust is a bit slower....(?)

For me the POR-15 did very little, but I was shocked how the rust kept rusting underneath the por. What the other poster is saying is POR needs rust to stick, so you flash rust the surface, then apply the POR. Not prevent the rust..

I grinded down the rust, roughed the surface with 36 grit to give it teeth. I even used a sand blaster to give it grip. The areas that held up the best were my doors that I sand blasted the surface heavily with glass bead.

You've put on the POR, and my point isn't to poo poo it, but realistically I thought the POR would have been better. I would have preferred using a paint that the rust could have bubbled up sooner, then I could have hit it with touch up grind, then let it bubble under the paint till a big section failed.

Lot's of fun.

No worries. I totally get it. Preventing rust is the hardest things about maintaining our cruisers. I’m open to every suggestion! Thanks bud.
