...It's a little (Cough, cough)...a little...(cough, hack)... just a bit dusty out there today...

Should see my Cherokee. Horrible inside and out.

Pretty slow day, David H. and I took off up North to check things out. There was a lot of traffic up there today. Didn't really see any trouble spots. We headed down 327 first thing in the morning. I ended up finding a perfect Christmas tree up there, cut it down and strapped it to the top of the rig. After riding up there all day, probably should have run it through the car wash to get all the dust off of it. Ended up driving really fast, that seemed to have done it :D Got reports of a treegoer having a seizure on 322, someone called 911 and an ambulance was on it's way. We talked and figured we would just stay out of the way on that call. Headed down 351 to check out conditions, David thought he remembered it being more solid rock and not loose rocks in the trail, conditions were good, no ice in the critical spots, but some sheets in the shady spots. David and son looked for a tree up and down, but didn't find a worthy candidate.

After 351, we headed to 300U and 300V. We just happen to know that is where all the good trees are :) Lots of traffic there as well, though the new fence and holes at the start of the trail are stopping all of the smaller vehicles. David ended up finding a tree at the top of 300U, got it checked for the worms Rick warned us about, cut down and loaded. Headed out 300V, the ice glacier is in almost full effect. Someone has scattered a bail of hay across it for more traction. Got over that and headed to the top. Almost at 300 again, we heard some shooting. I climbed up to the top of the ridge to see where it might be coming from, assuming that anyone with a brain would be shooting at a ground backstop.... I was wrong. After hearing dirt and tree parts being sprayed at me, I came running back down the hill and told David to get moving. David called the forest service while I went down the adjacent trail looking to see if I could find the shooter party. Turns out these idiots had a clay pigeon thrower and were shooting a shotgun into the hillside over 300V.... Some people. We let the Forest Service handle them since I sometimes lack the patience and tact to handle stupid people delicately.

And that was the end of our day. Until next weekend...

They didn't get that bale out fast enough. Took out my headlight and turn signal sliding off the ice. Another dent. Oops. Pretty slow day for us. We heard the shooting while on 315/314. Couldn't pin point it though. Glad yall did!

I didn't have to work hard to find them, not sure how close I came to getting peppered with those shotgun pellets, but it was close... Spooky close. Sorry to hear about the dents, that spot cost me a new mirror and a door dent a few years back.

You just have to know where to look. :D They were on a social route that takes off from a campsite on 315 and were 1/2 mile back in a valley. It was a group of 2 Captains and 2 Staff Sargents from Peterson. Pfeiffer wrote them all warnings for shooting in a closed area (That area is closed to shooting all year.) and for having vehicles where they didn't belong. They were shooting safely into a hillside. So there's one good point.

It's the same area that has a mud pit (actually a couple of them now) in a creek, and I pulling a hide-a-bed sofa out of there a couple of weeks ago. Pfeiffer is going to push to get some post-and-cable fencing up in the area. It's a nice little area that is getting trashed very, very quickly.

Speaking of this weekend.... the truck is all gassed up (just passed 150K this week!!!), Grandma is coming down to watch the kiddos, and I'm feeling great! So....... See you all this weekend, I'll be up for both days.

Hoping that snow forecast for Sunday holds true. :steer:

Got an email today from the FS requesting photos of people enjoying themselves cutting down Christmas trees.

Anyone grab any pics? If not, no worries, I'll grab some this weekend.

We took a bunch - I'll download the camera tonight.

I will be in buena vista and won't be able to make it. Saw a bear paw print on the men's bathroom door when I was up there. I also saw a nice little mountain lion hanging around the parking lot too. I watched him for about 10 minutes or so then he walked 50 yards from the parking lot and laid down and covered his head with his tail for a little nap. The wife was a little unnerved. So when you air up in the parking lot maybe keep an eye open, and watch the dogs.

Here are a few pics - not the greatest.

So, the guys having trouble on the glacier, what happened? We ran it with no problems. I know two maybe three 80s and a full size extended cab pickup went out on V.

Also updated the list.

I went across the glacier ... crept up on it very slowly the first time, then couldn't go forward. A very little bit of momentum the second time and no problems. No sideways slipping at all.

You will have to ask Mr moose what exactly happened. I crossed the glacier ok, going dead slow. I looked back and he was driving onto it. Looked back a second later, and he had slid off. There was no straw on the ice at that point. It was very slick when we crossed. It was hard to stand on the ice to rig the winch. We pulled him back with my winch and a redirect, and then he used his winch to pull the nose of the truck back onto the trail.

Well, a conflict has come up with the kids tomorrow. I'm going to have to come up Sunday.

There was no straw for us either on Sat. we just took it slow. Were you going up/out or down/in?
