Seems like an "as-found" baseline would need to be established (possibly immediately following a bearing replacement, or complete overhaul) so the wear can be tracked by comparison. Not sure a first time oil analysis would have the ability to assess bearing damage if it already exists. It does sound like a great method though.

They have a database of what is normal 1hdt readings and will tell how you compare to the engins baseline along with establishing one for you. They take into account engine mileage along with mileage on the oil.

I did an oil analysis on an engine that did not show results consistent with wear that was observed

Its not a 100% test

I suspect there are cases where "wear" occurs (acute as in contamination) and it will show up in an oil test if you were to be lucky enough to test THAT OCI

Whereas some cases will subsequently settle out after damage is done and several OCI's have passed and there's a "stabilization" that may not show indicators of wear in subsequent tests

If I'm following you correctly, that is what I was thinking as well. Let's say some manner of babbitt delamination has occurred (unknown to a new buyer etc.) and is no longer liberating material, oil analysis in theory will not tell you those pieces are missing, but rather the amount of wear naturally occurring between oil changes with "what's left" of the bearing surface still bonded. Lots of opinions and experiences on the subject.

In my observation after pulling a set of BEB's it was obvious that a foreign body had gone through the oil loop and lodged into the soft surface of the bearing (bearing did its job) but in the process did some relatively minor scoring of corresponding crank surface for that cylinder

I believe that the "damage" or "wear" associated with that initial event likely would have shown up if an oil analysis were performed on that OCI

But that was prior to my ownership and the oil analysis of the current OCI showed no CONTINUED wear......ie it was not severe enough to continue to wear at a rate great enough that the oil analysis would flag.....at least not immediately.

In this particular case the issue manifests as a lower engine tick once it comes up to temp in cylinder #5

I put new BEB's in while I was there and buttoned it up and there was no change the original issue/tick

I might be able to drive this engine for a long time but I dont do well mentally with rolling the dice like that so I am building a replacement from a short block and will rebuild this original engine at some point

Hope that makes sense.....and its entirely possible my theory is totally wrong

They will tell you how your metal content ranks against baseline 1hdt's and then how it ranks against subsequent tests.

Ie your metal is a little high. If it stays high you have an issue.
