I removed the tail light and it just slipped right in. Bolt holes already there, took 5 minutes to do the bottom. Top was a different story. Some other guys here mentioned they cut the corner off the top brace and it slid in without body damage, wish I would have done that but oh well.

Got the bottom one in, realized I had to go in from the inside rear passenger panel, know off the top of your head who got that top piece in without body damage?

A little bit OT but has anyone tried the factory 4 Runner tire carrier from a similar year vehicle?

I didn't have no body damage. I trimmed the top left of the bracket.

If anyone is still interested in this mod I have a carrier, lower tailgate, upper lift hatch (rusty but has all the bracketry) and licence plate relocator that is surplus to my needs. All you'd need is the internal body reinforcements which might actually be easier to fabricate than to re-use factory ones.

Located in Calgary. $500 for the works.

Actually the buyer is going to need the stock 2 brackets. Both brackets are a perfect fit to complete the install. The bottom bracket is a bolt on bracket which can be taken out. The top bracket is spot welded. That will have to be drilled. Just looking out for the buyers. Good luck with the sale.

OK Thanks. I might be able to source them too.

I sure wish you were closer. Oh well, I doubt I could get the wife to approve it at this point anyway.

Love this mod.

However, given the body damage the OP inflicted on his truck during the install, I'm going to have to keep saving my pennies for a new bumper with swing out.

Found a donor vehicle for the carrier and other juicy mods...

Hi busmup808 and rdang;

Greetings from sunny Ecuador. It seems I’ve just purchased a second 80 – a 92, supposedly for the wify, but in reality it’s a JDM donor vehicle which after I get what I need out of it (rear AC, Dual tank and rear tire carrier), I’ll sell it. It’s not in such good shape, but it’s a steal and could look better with some TLC. Let’s see how it looks after I do what I need to it…

I’ve followed with great interest rdang’s thread on the rear tire carrier and wanted to ask you both a few questions, since you seem to be the specialists on the subject in this forum:

1. What is the original color of the Carrier? The PO has painted it the same grey as the bumpers but it does not look OEM to me
2. It looks like there should be some sort of locking pin that goes into a hole in the lower arm hinge, in order to keep the carrier from closing. Could any of you please post a pic of that pin, because it seems to be missing on mine. In fact, there is a place where there would seem to be a holder for such pin but it’s missing
3. How does the wiring for the license plate holder connect to the main harness?

Any more insight you can provide mould be much appreciated. Thanks and all the best,
:p

#1The original color should be flat black.

#2I'll go outside and take a picture

#3 It plugs right in

Wow, it's been a long time since I've looked at this post... sorry for the late reply. Dontblink, the body damages wasn't too bad... it doesn't bother me much, I've gotten worse damage from the trails. I did see busmup808 who did the same thing and cut the upper bracket to fit it without body damage, which would have been the smart thing to do :-).

Thanks!

Hi busmup808.

Thanks for the quick reply! I will start posting pics once the job begins. First step: remove lower hatch from donor vehicle (AKA the Grinch, because it;s the same horrid color), and paint it black like "the hearse" so I can continue with the install - hopefully that will happen tomorrow.

I will also start gutting the sub-tank and AC system as far as I can go without parental supervision :hhmm:. I need to get this project done ASAP so I can start showing the car and get is sold! If you or anyone else is interested in the rest of the conversions by all means let me know.

We'll be in touch,

Sounds good, now get to work! Lol

Hi guys,

During this whole week I have had the time to strip the whole interior to get to the goodies of the donor vehicle. Among other things I've sent the donor lower tailgate to get sprayed the color of my LX and get the tire carrier painted the OEM flat black.

I have taken out the rear right tailight and all of the interior cladding, nd for the life of me I still can't figure out how any of you extracted the upper brace from the donor vehicle without either cutting into the (inner) pillar or the outer body. This is where I'm stuck... If anyone could contribute some kind words or photos please do. Thanks,

I believe we had to cut out the upper inner bracket. We cut it from the inside of the truck to get it out. I might be able to get a photo of the inside where it was cut but it won't be for a few days.

If anyone is interested, I have the original swingout from my JDM sitting in my garage. It includes the latch plate for the lower gate and the upper cushion. The only problem: it is rusted right through the bottom tube near the bottom mount. It looks like it was bent and then welded at some point. I had a 315 on it and it eventually gave out. It is totally fixable, but I replaced it with another for a good price. Here's a photo of the rusted through area just after it let go:

The OP gave me the whole carrier attached to the R D pillar. He torched it off. You can also use a saw zaw. When that is done, all you have to do is drill the spot welds out for the top bracket. The bottom bracket just has to be unbolted to take off.

As for the top bracket, when I reinstalled I used nut and bolt in the spot welds. Then I welded in different areas for support. Working great and no problems holding a 35" Goodyear MYR.
