Using an aftermarket pump is the better than running the OEM setup. Some guys have received the transfer assemblies but:
1. you don't know how many miles are on the systems. (when they will fail)
2. you can't buy just a pump from Toyota you need to buy the whole transfer assembly... $400-500 with discount.
3. with aftermarket you can swap in a new pump from just about anywhere.
Also Im a little OCD but I still run a filter before my pump. The subtank pickup has a sock to filter but a small inline filter is good insurance.
As for the check valve....Im not sure its necessary as you are dumping fuel into the main tank via the breather tube. Depending where you insert the T I don't think its totally necessary. Im not with my rig so maybe Pkelly can comment on this so others can have additional options for pumps.
lastly,
There are options to tap the main harness in the rear quarter panel if you had the phone system installed. This would require some leg work. You would also need to verify if the wiring gauge is adequate for the pump. I think you would need to run a separate wire for the pump. i think its not an issue with gauge or switch.
I also forgot to mention that regarding the rivnuts. If you have access to a welder put a small bead to secure before tightening. This will make installation painless. This was suggested by George IIRMC.

I completely agree on fuel filter. I've "cleaned" my tank by pouring 1-2 gallons of fuel into it and let it set after sloshing it around a few times but that's just to get the big stuff out.
I had a hard time finding a fuel filter local that had 5/16" barb. I will mount it before an near the fuel pump. The fuel pickup is line 5/16" then filter, then reducer(brass from jegs) to 3/8" to pump, pump to 1/2x1/2x3/8".
I bought my filter through amazon after going to 3 parts stores with no luck. YMMV.

If the fuel passage is not blocked off when the pump shuts off fuel can and will drain from the sub into the main unattended. The pump I have does not have a check valve in it and I have had fuel transfer to the main on it's own. Since my pump was one I had kicking around the garage and it was "free" I have not bothered to do anything about it until it finally quits. I simply remember that when it looks like I'm getting good mileage on the main I'm probably getting some from the sub. IE it's too good to be true.
