I am shopping around for a NV4500-hopin' to park it behind a 4BT, I found one about 5 hours away and supposedly has 70k on it for $1500 with the bell and x-fer case. It was in a chevy 1997 chevy 4x4.. A dodge/cummins unit at a junk yard was $1500 and about 6 hours away. I've seen them on Ebay and don't trust them to have been rebuilt with high end components. I was told that a good quality rebuild will cost $1k for a total rebuild vs. refurbish. Thanks in advance.

$1,500 seems really high even these days. Is it the stock chev tcase behind it ? are you going to run that ? You wont need the bell anyway but I guess you can sell that and the case if you arent going to use it.

I plan on running a late '62 series part time 4wd case with the McNamara. I will have to adapt the tranny to the t-case. I was going to run the H55f but it doesn't have as high of an OD ratio and I think the NV has the shifter come out a little farther back which would mean one less mod'.
I'm thinking if I can run the stock chevy bellhousing that would work for the chevy adapter and flywheel I have right now on the 4bt. My preference would be to get all of the dodge stuff adapter back. I just don't want something with 200k on it. The dodge diesels are pretty popular around here and rarely make it into the paper if they are wrecked or parted out.
I was warned the chevy BH tends to not stand up to the diesel's torque..
I have already collected the stuff to run the H55f, less the tranny and clutch bucket and some hardware so if it looks like too much hassle I might go back that direction.
I talked to the guy tonight and said I was going to think about it. He is up there with the wrecking yard's prices. Thanks for the response.

I think the 55 would be cool but thats me. I had a NV4500 with dual toy cases and it was nice but not the cats meow that everyone makes it out to be.

Have you checked for pricing on car - part dot com ?

Hey Keif I am sure you have seen it but there was a NV4500 on Craigslist here in Portland a day or so ago. I will see if I can dig up the link. If you decide to go that route hit me up as I will take the Toyota conversion stuff off your hands.

heres one: http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/pts/1564176473.html

Also may contact these guys. http://portland.craigslist.org/yam/pts/1562298411.html I can swing by and check it out for you as they are 5 minutes away. I beleive that Aaron aka wristpin's brother owns or at least works at this diesel shop.

I actually tallked to him, I don't need the t-case and it sounds like this one had the internal cylinder, I am not sure if that is a fit.. $1500 seems like a lot but it was out of a 98. He was willing to haul it down with a friend but I wasn't too sure on committing to that sight unseen. I have also found that the early GM version have the low crawl ratio but a greater gear spread, according to the Manafre manual there are three gear ratios available, one has a 4.??, another has the 5.??, and the early ones have the 6.?? which is rarer and only was in the early years. I talked to someone who has one for $1k that is out of a 93 chevy with 60k, he saw the truck and bought the drive train out of it. This one should have the low 6.??first gear but also has the wider gear spread. I think with the diesel I really don't need the granny low first but would benefit more from the tighter gear ratios.
I was also looking at the ranger overdrive. 27 % OD and I could use a stock 4 speed. I don't like the idea, however of adding more parts and pieces into the drive train.
I will admit that this diesel conversion business isn't simple if you can't just be satisfied with working with the junk you have- say just throw in a 4 speed and forget the overdrive. I will admit I am a miser for the most part and hate the idea of spending more on parts and pieces than I did for the rig they are for!

I think I talked to the guy at the shop you linked- nice guy. I wasted about 20 minutes of his time and I think he's parted out several stepvans.

yeah he seems decent enough. they did some work on my brother in laws old ford and did a really nice job. they seem to have a steady stream of 4bts in but at $2500 to $4000 a bit too steep for me.

let me know what you come up with!

I am planning to use the GM NV4500 4wd tranny because I have a GM adapter on my 4bt. AA make the bell housing i need and the tcase split case adapter. So my set up will go 4bt/AA nv4500 bell housing/ GM Nv4500 4wd/ AA ADapter to fj60 split case

I found out my NV4500 has a harmonic balancer/dampner on it and I don't think that stays with the AA. I think you could use a chevy bell for the nv4500 but was warned the aluminum might not last. I am curious what the differences in the 6.5 vs. 350/454 bellhousings look like for the NV4500 and also the throwout bearing options. Afterall, I am still curious why I need an adapter to go from chevy to chevy..

I bought mine here.

If you are going with a Toyota T-Case, contact Georg at Valley Hybrid in Stockton. He can tell you which one to not buy. They are different through the years.

Forget about running a Toybox behind it. It will not hold up to the torque the 4BT will deliver. Marlin himself talked me out of buy one of his once I told him what I was going to do with it. You will need an Orion.

Dan,
did you use the 40 or 60 t-case? do they make a orion for the split case?

Thanks
Joe

The bell housing that came with the trans from the 97 cummins i have is aluminium, as well as the adapter plate that is between it and the motor.
