my 22re 5 speed 4runner is having some trouble shifting into gears. before i get it going, i really have to jiggle the shifter to get it into first gear, i'm guessing this has something to do with it sitting out in the freezing cold, but once it is all warmed up, i have trouble getting it into gear. it has a lot of slop, and i plan on doing the shifter bushing, i read about the replacement here on a thread, but i have a feeling it is more than that. how can you tell if your tranny is going? what else can i replace besides the shifter bushing without tearing the tranny out of the truck? how do i go about diagnosing the problema? thanks!

How many miles on it?

How old is the clutch?

Have you ever checked or changed the gear lube in the tranny?

My W56 often won't go into 1st at a dead stop, but if I throw it into 3rd first, then it goes right into 1st no problem.

shifting

the trans has a little over 100 thousand on it, and the clutch has less than 10,000 on it. I guess I'll just take care of those three things and see if it makes any difference. I read that the bushing replacement is a one hour job or so and a couple of bucks in parts, so I'll start there....

how would i know if there was any stripped gears or missing teeth or something more serious? what would some signs of a major tranny problem be in a standard trans? thanks again!

Major carnage in a tranny will show up as a rattling sound when you drive it, like there are marbles rolling around in it. When you drain the fluid, bits and pieces of metal will fall out and be stuck to the magnet in the drain plug. The fluid in the drain pan will look "silvery", like weak silver paint.

Problems with getting into gear are usually caused by worn synchros. But it can also be the shifter seat, so start there and with a drain & fill of the fluid. Get the shifter seat from Marlin, it's better than the OEM one, and since you have a W56 the dealer will tell you the part doesn't exist anyway.

Report back what you find.

shifting problems

well the only marbles i hear rolling around are in my head, so i think my tranny is in pretty good shape...

i was on my way to the store today to get some fluid and some parts, and my water pump went...haha...so when i get that out of the way and get into the sloppy shifting, i'll report back....thanks all!!
