Alright guys, I got one for you. I tried searching but found nothing.... I have started noticing a noise that seems to originate from the dash on my 91. It gets louder and faster the faster I drive. It only happens when the truck is moving. It kind of sounds like a playing card stuck in a bicycle wheel but not as loud. Changing the climate settings have no effect on the noise. Any ideas? Thanks

Isn't there a little exhust fan under the dash.

If so, could be that.

It does kind of sound like a fan or something. Where under the dash would this exhaust fan be located on my 91?

I will say on my 97 I’ve noticed that my blower fan does go faster when I’m accelerating from a stop so if there was some debris in it, I’d say that could be it.

I don't think it's the blower fan because changing the fan speed from off to high has no effect on the noise whatsoever, the only thing that changes the noise is the speed of the truck.

Not sure if early models had the fan; mine is '97. The fan, which looks like a small computer cooling fan, was tucked up high, deep, and central (behind and above the radio).

Thanks, I just did a new head unit a couple weeks ago so I will tear back in there while it is fresh on my mind and see if that fan is the culprit. The more I think about I am leaning towards this fan.

So I just pulled my head unit and found the fan in question. When I turn the key on it constantly runs and is nice and quiet. I cannot get this fan to make the noise I was hearing and I don't think it is the culprit. I forgot to mention the sound comes and goes, some days its quiet others it is not. My friend thinks it's my speedo cable, how would I check this? Any other ideas?

Disconnect it at the transfer, go for a test drive.

Why didn't I think of that lol, I like it. Next time it starts the noise I will do that. Thanks

So I got this noise again. I disconnected the speedo cable at the transfer case and it didn't go away. It's not the fan in the dash. I took a video of the noise, it's kind of hard to hear over the road and vehicle noise but if you turn it up you can hear it. the more I listened it sounded like maybe it was coming from the passenger side of the vehicle. Any thoughts on what to check next?

Hey @rolliges, I'm aiming to pull that little fan out of my '96. If I pull the radio out, is it obvious where the little fan you're referring to is? It's up above the OEM radio? Is anything else affected by removing the fan. That thing drives me crazy. I have a newer single DIN radio which I think I might need to remove to get to the fan. Thanks.

If your talking about the little computer fan thing in the dash than it should be pretty obvious. When I installed a single din in my 91 the fan was basically right above my head unit if I recall correctly. I think the fan was pretty much right under the dash clock.

Thanks, I appreciate that. Doesn't sound too tough, I'll find and destroy that pesky thing this weekend. Cheers.

there is no speedo cable, its sensor driven from the transfer case (my 95 fzj80 is sensor driven) I m pretty sure 90-92 were cable
is your odometer / trip meter working properly?
it could be the trip meter reset that needs to be pressed a few times if the little gears in it are kinda stuck and will 'tick' as you move along and the faster you go the faster the tick will be.

The speedometer, odometer, and trip meter are all driven by a speedo cable that goes from the transfer case to the instrument cluster on a 91 fj80.

The noise I was experiencing in my 91 back in 2019 was not caused by this cable.

id still look at the trip meter reset assembly in the odometer.

mine was ticking before it finally stopped being able to 'reset' and then stopped working altogether . had to carefully araldite the the assembly where the reset pin allows it to spin back to zero

Whilst I did not get the noise this is the only reason I am looking for a speedo, mine broke at the axle support but I am not sure my hands are steady enough (recent brain op) to fix it. So makes send it could be ticking, the cogs moving faster as the speed of the vehicle increases.

Regards

Dave
