Anyone have luck in identifying their noise? This seems like the closest description to one I've been chasing for many years. Pulled the exhaust fan in dash out yonks ago as couldn't see it doing anything useful since it just vents straight into the bulkhead (and needed extra space for cabling of extra switches and dual din head unit etc.)
Mine only started many 000 km after changing speedo cable, but always figured that was it. Have cleaned and re-lubed my cable about 4 times in the last week, re-fitted it every which way (there's only so many ways it can fit ultimately), and have then started isolation testing to see if I'm just crazy.

With the speedo cable disconnected at transfer case I still get a buzzing albeit quieter and less frequent which makes me think there may be 2 buzzing components. Only occurs while under acceleration, never at cruising speed. I'm still testing with having only some of the electrical plugs in the back of cluster connected, but I did disconnect the one that drives tacho and STILL got the noise... which means that only the pressure gauge or temp gauge could be causing it - They don't appear to have moving parts to me, so not sure how this would make sense.

Going to do about my 12th pull-apart, clean, re-assembly of the odo and speedo wheels, but they're obviously not the only issue.

Weird that it all started happening at the same time for absolutely no reason one day when cruising on highway.

Ready to break glass over this issue as I was sure the speedo cable had to be it, but nope! Shopping for entire replacement cluster as well :P

Noise persists with no instrument cluster installed whatsoever, and discounted boost gauge as possible culprit...
This really just leaves the cruise control ECU (cruise not turned on, so this shouldn't be live, or have moving parts), some of the AC control electronics (again, shouldn't have moving parts in the control units & it's definitely not the actuators as I've just had a whole saga fixing those), the steering column, or some sound in the engine bay that I'm hearing through the firewall - the airbox would be most directly behind instrument cluster.

Obviously the steering column has a moving link that steering affects, and accelerating out of a turn seems to be a reliable way to create the noise, but it surely shouldn't be able to make a noise activated by acceleration while travelling dead straight?????

I never figured it out on my 91 although I can say it wasn't the speedo cable, related to the speedo, or the little PC fan thing. I got to the point where I just ignored it but my suspicion was something to do with the hvac blower or squirrel cage thing. My 97 doesn't do it either.

Goodluck

Thanks Leonard for feedback. Sorry your noise persists =( My first 1990 VX never had the noise.

I've read like every piece of literature on the internet now about car sounds, and while I'm no closer to knowing what causes it, I'm now certain it's not from inside the cabin. I've pinpointed it to occurring at exactly 2100RPM when between 40 and 60 KM/H... so somewhere in the engine/drive train mechanisms I guess. Gonna see what mechanic can find with this info.
