Rook question here - Bought my first 40 3 months ago - finally getting around to poking around. Pulled the air intake and found the below. Pulled it apart, wire wheeled it, naval jelly, sand and now ready for primer and paint. My question - how does the attached picture (valve) function?Does the bronze piece have a fluid in it? Upon start it receives warmed air and once it reaches a certain temp it closes the valve so the intake receives outside air? Ran hot and cold water on the bronze, had no effect on valve.

It uses the heated air from the exhaust manifold to close the flapper to help with cold wx starts. I took a hair dryer to mine to make sure it worked properly. There is usually a hose going from the forward manifold to the lower part of the air cleaner arm right below the flap.

Great thanks, will try tonight! From some research it sounds like if it doesn't work, a viable option is just fixing it in the closed position so it only receives ambient air - I 'll mainly be driving in the warmer months any way.

I have a (November of 76) 40 and it looks like the flapper on the air cleaner is down stream of both the cold air and warm air intake ports. I don't see the brass connection to control the flapper and it looks to be spring loaded. Is there a cable or something that connects to it? Any bets on my specific make and model? ( I'm traveling this week for work but if my memory serves me correctly its downstream of the intakes.) maybe I'm crazy!
