So my daughters 1993 80 series petrol (fzj80 - 1FZ Australia) lost all drive the other day. there was a bearing noise that was getting worse. she stopped at that point. I swapped cars and attempted to limp the 80 home but slowly going up a hill had a complete loss of drive to all wheels.

I've tried LR and HR with and without CDL engaged. no difference. Car rolls in park as well. transmission has plenty of fluid. suspect transfer case (TC).
I've removed front and back drive shafts and when in any gear there is no movement out of the transfer case.

I'm planning to drop the TC and pull apart to diagnose.

Before I do any suggestions, thoughts etc?

Gearbox seems to engage into gear fine but no final drive.

I've done a fair bit of searching but would love some feedback before I drop the TC.

Thanks in advance.

Did you remove both drivelines at the same time? I would put the rear one back in, lock the center diff manually and see if you get anything. If that works for you I would then move to the front and check the drive flanges on the front hubs, they are known to strip out.

@OffRoadScott I locked the diff when doth drive shafts were still attached. still no drive and would roll in park.
You might still have stripped drive flanges, I would take the front drive out or put the rear back in and see how it goes.

Also, I would make sure the transfer case is actually locking into L or H. If it is in neutral it will roll.

ok. will give that a go. if that doesn't make a difference?

Also check the neutral safety switch too. It would not cause any grinding but if off a little it will not let you shift the transmission properly.

Maybe try taking out the fill plug of the T-case and then having someone (with the drive shafts removed for safety) put the truck in gear and maybe rev a little. Look into the hole, and if fluid is moving, then the tranny is sending power out the output. I'd then make sure the T-case is actually in gear. (like look under the truck while someone shifts it to make sure the linkage is moving.) $0.02

So a bit more time to look at the transfer case.
If I put in LR and CDL the outputs work correctly if I manually spin them. so TC not in neutral . Still no drive going from gearbox at all to the TC.

fly wheel is turning as expected so suspect I've snapped the input shaft or some other gear somewhere.

Trying to drop the TC as per (Removing The Transfer Case (TC) - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/removing-the-transfer-case-tc.446639/) other thread but having issues with bolt #5 as I dont have a decent 17mm swivel socket. will try again in the morning. if no joy will order one and try again once I have it.

So couldn't get one of the pesky bolts out without the right kind or swivel socket.
Decided to pull apart in situ to see what the damage was.
Not looking too healthy.
So main input gear and receiving gear is cactus.

Cheapest option now will be to source a used transfer case from a reputable wrecker who offers a warranty
Yep, on the hunt for one now. Just need to work out which TC will work. I know they were generally the same. I believe they used the same box and TC on the 100 series and 105's here in Australia as well as the 80 series.

105s use a different input gear, at least they do in the diesel versions.
So hzj105 transfer won't be directly compatible.
Fzj105 should be, or 100 series should be good
