So I totalled my 4runner in a bad accident last week. 2 days later I rushed to buy this LX 450.
Has some issues. I was trying to figure out why aftermarket stereo wouldn't work. Hack job! Wires twisted together no tape.

Anyway I put dash back together and now no dash lights. Is there a connector in the stereo/HVAC area that I missed?

If it's for cretain not a blown fuse I'd look into the dimmer switch and make sure it didn't blow from being energized without ground or shorted during the install. You can use a jumper on the harness to bypass it an get full lights if it is the problem .

I'd check both fuses and relays in the kick panel by your left foot. I've had both go out, resulting in no dash lights/gauges. I believe there's a guage fuse in the knee-fuse panel.

Nor sure where this goes? It is in lighter harness.

Check the 10 amp gauge fuse. That thing controls everything you have mentioned and a ton more. Start with EC1 and EC2 where the wires go through the firewall and head back from there.

Myself and others have had issues with this circuit and it's a bit of a monster if that is the issue. The best advice that ZackR shared was to go about it systematically until you find the spot where it either blows or doesn't blow and then look at those wires. All I did to "fix" mine was fiddle around with the wires that go into EC1 and EC2. Something is probably corroded in one of my connectors, but it has been functioning just fine for almost 500 miles. I may have to revisit it at some point, but finding where the short was occurring was the toughest part. I spent a few weeks fiddling around with it and even had another shop take a look at it.

Here is that thread. Lot's of good stuff in there.

10 amp gauge fuse keeps blowing

Thanks for the link. Since I had stereo area apart it would have to be something in that area.

Do you know for sure that it didn't have the issue before? If you disconnect the stereo and you still have the issue, think about that thread. It does seem likely that a botched stereo job could wipe out parts of that circuit, but the stock radio isn't on it. That is why I thought your other symptoms sounded like 10 amp Gauge Fuse. I think you would be looking at the area around or in the J4 connector.

Just FYI, both the dash lights and the tail lights are supplied by the "TAIL" fuse, not the GAUGE fuse.

Where are all the wires hooked up at? In the dash center or back to behind the factory amp/ECU? The LX stereo wiring is different than the LC.

Which lights are the Dash lights? Most of the combination meter lights are on the 10 amp gauge fuse.
Sorry, dash & meter ILLUMINATION. The GAUGE fuse supplies some of the INDICATOR lamps.

I just helped a friend fix his taillights and dash light by pulling and reseating the relays in the kick panel by drivers left foot.

Check that. Cheap and easy.

Ended up being 15a tailight fuse. Thought I swapped good one in, guess not! All good for now.

Anybody think that LED’s in the brake and reverse lights could cause this? I just swapped bulbs last night but I haven’t driven my truck at night since I put the whole dash back together. Just started it this morning and no dash lights… but I don’t know if it was an existing problem. First day at new job so haven’t had a chance to look at anything yet… but that was something I did change last night.
