I didn't say the advertised LJ wasn't way overpriced. It is !
The LJ series are no lesser cruisers compared to the "heavy duty" trucks. They actually perform better both on and offroad. Which I didn't realize till I bought one :D

:D...

you know my feeling about one area with this one....It may well come down to "duty service levels"...not wheeling abilities of the said trucks.

I don't think I feel quite as strong as the fella who said on one forum "the 2LT is the engine Toyota did wrong"...as there are stated fixes and things that can be done to make it much better.

The couple of times I have been to Moab I have seen stock to slightly modified 80 series kick the butts of high dollar built heavy duty 40/60 series...

I do like the platform of the light duty series...for sure, and I am looking forward to more and more coming in. Late 2008 will be an interesting time.

Amaggia, Have you seen these.... "Some of the reputable importers are selling mint BJ71's and HZJ73's for less than $15k"??

If you think they are mint without seeing them then I suggest you go take a look at them in person - and take them for a test drive - have an inspection done by a qualified service garage.

There is no way a "mint" HZJ73 sells for 15K - sorry but it just ain't true. Or, I guess people have different opinions on what is mint.

Regards,

I guess the word "mint" means different things to different people. To me, and I hope most cruiser heads out there, "mint" is a truck that has NO rust, NO body damage, NO interior rips / tears. Maybe this is excellent condition, not mint.

I think a "mint" it's a very hard sell in the cruiser community. I would love to have a truely mint cruiser, but I'll be damned if I spend $32,000 CDN on a HDJ81 or $19,500 on a BJ73 (with out lockers). What's the point? A few trips into the bush or offroad and you now have gone from "mint" to "excellent" or "very good" condition.

If you're going to only cruise the mall and wash / wax your baby daily, go with the "mint" truck, heck it might even increase in value like FJ/BJ 40/42's. I'm a little more realistic and put my truck to use. It doesn't have to be "mint", but it sure as sh!t better not have any rust on it!

I'm not an expert on Japanese culture, but I know that they put a huge emphasis and pay top dollar for PERFECTION. Whether it's cars, girls, or fruit. I'm no where near a perfectionist.

I must admit that I haven't seen the cruiser that I'm making reference to, but the guys who are bringing them in are known to bring in top quality stuff. Look for your self. 1990 HZJ73 1988 BJ71

Ok,

You mentioned rust free and excellent interior - what about a truck that comes with original maintenance records and was a one owner truck? Knowing that type of history is very important and would abviously bring the price up. I'd sooner have a truck with 110,000 kms on it that was a one owner and has all the records that one thats doesn't - and I would pay a higher price for that.

What about a "mint" truck that is nice on the outside, and inside, but needs a complete brake job, all fluids changed, hubs and bearings repacked, brake booster, starter etc? Would you rather buy a truck thats is mint and doesnt have that work done for a certian price - or pay a bit more and have a truck with a complete brake job/inspection and won't need anything for 5,000 kms - the next oil change. I'd rather have a truck that is a little @&@&@&@&ty looking but is in perfect mechanical condition.

And don't forget about shipping costs - add 1-1.3K to get a rig from BC to Toronto.

Bottom line is - a truck that has been thoroughly looked after, has had an extensive prep pak is worth more money that a truck that just comes off the boat and is thrown on the lot.

You get what you pay for.

i have to agree with you, since you brought one of my trucks into the discussion. i know what i do with my personal trucks, i USE them, some would say i abuse them so for me to have a truck like this HDJ81 would be a complete waste of time and money. it would look like one of the lower end units in a year so why pay the coin.
yes, again you are right, it is a hard sell to sell a cruiser of this caliber in the Cruiser comunity but there are those that want a sweet ass turn key rig ready to go on their jaunt to Alaska and on down to Argentina. for them this is the perfect rig.
cheers

Since I know Cruiser's and used cars, I would never expect the purchase of a 10 yr+ used truck to not need new brakes, tires, axle rebuild, starter rebuild etc. Although this has been learned from experience.

The problem is that to 99% of the buying public expects these things to be done to any used vehicle, not just the reputable guy's trucks. So they will look at the price difference and go  They will niavely think that all used JDM TLC's without rust or dings and low km's are the same. The flood gates are open for JDM Cruiser imports in BC, just look at the Buy&Sell and the Autotrader. That means the average Joe is going to shop based on price first and slimey dealers are going to water down everyones credibility.

The people that will apprcieate the maintenance already done and/or records will prefer to do it themselves at the savings of some capital cost. I think to sell to the general public you need to have competative pricing, unfortunately the Canadian mindset is price first and usually quantity over quality.

I really hope that these trucks go to good homes, unfortunately you may be sitting on them for a while. I'm assuming that they don't get driven in the winter. ;)

I suppose those slimy dealers importing less than quality units will make it harder for those owners trying to sell their good quality cruisers to upgrade to another.

Maybe there should be some "imported by Wayne" or "Marko" stickers? Not to exclude the other good names...

this seems to be a relatively small community, and everyone out west here seems to know everyone else by first name. I think that anyone looking at a vehicle will probably be able to make a couple fone calls and get the whole history from the time it landed at the dock.
