Newbie W56 tranny ???

Ok in a previous post I asked about my 85 4runner tranny starting to whine. Well I found a guy on Craigslist and he says he has a 88 22r tranny n transfer case that had straight axles that was a exact fit to my 85 4 runner. Now I looked at 4x4wire tech section and not really sure what he has. How do I know if its the correct one ? Besides being top loader??? I thought 88 was a IFS truck and a front loader. He didn't have pics of tranny but I guess I'll have to ask for some. Thanks in advance for any info.

IIRC, all 86 and later were IFS, unless someone did a solid axle conversion on his rig. It is kinda popular to do. John

You could have him look at the data plate on the firewall, it will tell you the tranny code. But, that's assuming it still has the stock tranny installed and hasn't been swapped. Best bet is to get some photos. Here's one of the best identification guides:
