ive got a toy buddy who has a 67 fj55(i assume 55 since its a 67)

i want to know where to go to find out 2 types of things.

1-background and base info on OEM setup-transfer case ID, axles/ratio, general fino-wheelbase.. etc...

2-where to find info/possibilities for doing a full SBC swap with 700R4 and??? transfer case.

this is my friends truck and hes semi-handicapped so must have auto and wants OD.
he uses it as a woods rig for hunting but if i can help him right then it will take the place of his 80-'s chevy as a DD rig.

i am VERY skilled at fab and car mods and all things mechanical-i just know NOTHING ABOUT TOYOTAS... =)
MY expert AREA IS 1947-1955/9 gm TRUCKS.. =)
Thanks
Mark

i would love info but dont want to waste time so links would be great too!

Right on, man!
But I agree that that pig is to early to bastardize. As for finding out about the stock set up, and what CAN be done, You're in the right place. The factory service manual is recommended reading, as well as all you can take from here. There is a search feature that you can use to find threads on whatever you want, and alot of info in the FAQ in the 40, 45 55 series tech (you're at the door of the 55 guys only club)(kinda like Star Wars nerds:flipoff2:) There are lots of options w/ the 55. Where abouts are you guys located? There are good smart cruiser heads all over this land-and others!

Agreed. We all like to tinker and f**k with these or we wouldn't have them. Find some local cruiserheads, and like lambcrusher said, there is a wealth of knowledge on this board.

The FJ 55 is very similar to the FJ 40 so the modifications/basterdisation will be very similar.

i got to googling and it may even be a 40. its for sure a 67. i havnt crawled over it and done a VIN check. its got pass ofsfet axles and is that rear a 44?

BTW-sorry-he is dead set on SBC conversion and he needs an automatic. hes a "portly" dude and has a lot of back problems. if my rig it would get some sort of stroker inline 6 like my 1950/1981 checy/jeep rig. checy truck on jeep waggy with 4.6 stroker... plenty of power and a great work rig.

hes a smart guy but a little unschooled on doing anythign non-stock.

BTW-you doin a 4BTA conversion?

thread hijack-im installing a 4BTA into a 50 chevy suburban that will be cut up into a 4dr 9 passenger street height 4x4(not gravedigger)

thansk and keep the info flying.
oh BTW-hes in 96021 and i live in 95926-30 miles away.

Can you post up some pics for us?

Like was said, 4 door equals 45 or 55 (look like station wagons) If it was a 45, you could easily sell it clear $ to buy a 55 w/ a small block already in it.

45's are more rare than 55's.

Passenger side drop axles are in use in 40's before the 55 came on the scene.

40 series and 55 share the same passenger side drop axle housings, and similar axles used in 60's and 80's.

The axles are a Toyota product and not Dana 44's. I have heard folks compare the Toyota axle to a Dana 60.

Post pics or a VIN. The VIN plate should have a date of manufacture on it. The VIN will either start w/ FJ55- , or FJ40, or maybe FJ45? (not sure) and that will be your clue as to what you have.

Any ways Pre-1968 fj 40/45/55 Front axles will be Ball N Claw, with a V8 and automatic you will want to go to 4 wheel disc brake after 1975 Toyota FJ40/55 front axles were disc and booster master, you would likely go with A FJ60 Axles 3" wider and stronger knuckles too..

reply-all;
yes-vortec is superior. budget trumps wishes and "on hand" trumps budget.

after an extended phone call last night-it is a
1967 FJ40

he had already mentioned wanting 4wheel disc so maybe a complete axle swap in the best interest all the way around?

not sure 3" wider is desired though-skinny logging roads... overgrown...
