So after just dealing with a blown up waterpump and all that that entails I now have this issue. Tried to lower my spare tire for about an hour with no luck. The rod thing just spins and never catches no matter how much surgical precision I use to try and guide it in there ..Ugh... Any advice would be appreciated. I pulled the spare down maybe 5 times in 7 years of owning the truck...TIA

I don't see how, no mud around here these days, I used it about a week ago when lowering it to see the AHCI fluid level (that was the reason i was trying to lower it today)

Can you see down to the fitting with a bright light? Do you have a lock on the spare mechanism?

No lock, i can kinda see down but all I see is a hole... I know, not very helpful

That's gotta be no fun.

Can't help you with the problem but if all else fails, you might try:
1) Dropping the pulley contraption that holds the tire up. It's going to be a hard reach. Looks like 2x 12mm or 14mm bolts that come in from the top.
2) Drop the whole cross member that holds the spare up. Many more bolts, but they're accessible bolted to the frame. Don't forget the bolt that holds the channel that guides the tool into the pulley.

This pic might help

If you assume the winch is fubar, I would find someone with a torch and just cut the chain above the tire. I've done this a few times on rusty mini trucks, just put a ratchet strap around it so it doesn't fall on you. Also know the end part will fall down and it will be hot, so stay out of the way. It cuts very quickly, just point the torch away from the gas tank. Have a charged hose and extinguisher nearby just in case.

Once the tire is down, it's very easy to unbolt and replace the winch.

boy does that not look like fun with a 20" tire in the way lol. Thanks for the pic. There goes a day off next week lol

If you can get a wrench on the tire carrier bolts on the frame those come out pretty easy. Only three or four on each side.

lets hope. I will attempt this next week, here is hoping I don't need a spare. Question is, what do I do after I get it off|?

Another option I've seen done is to grind on the "cap" up inside the wheel, just keep grinding/cutting until you get the chain to let go. Wear lots of protection!

Put your rear bumper on?
Oh you mean with the carrier and tire? It should be obvious how to fix the winch if it is plugged etc. if it’s broken I think mine is still up under there, you can have it for shipping

Hahah thought crossed my mind. But being in Canada is a very difficult thing when it comes to these mods

So I just took a look and again if you don't care about sacrificing the winch, you should be able to sneak a Dremel tool up there and cut the chain. Same warning, the tire will try to fall on you.

I see no way to contort an arm to reach those bolts, while the tire is still in place.

I agree this would be a good play. May even be able to re-use everything depending on how the stop is mounted and just loose a couple links in the chain.
