Ladies and Gents,

I just moved back to Vic and bought a 60 series. I'm looking forward to meeting more owners around here. I'll likely not make it to the meeting tomorrow night, but now I know the day, I'll put it on the calendar.

I bought Tom B's HZJ 60 in Seattle yesterday and drove up. Some of you know the truck. Good fun. It needs a few finishing touches to pass BC Inspection, and changes to suit me, which include actually lowering it and going to smaller tires. yes, yes, I imagine the reactions, but the combination of OME heavey, SOA and 37s makes it less useable for me. I want 33s and a lower ride height. so if you want very new 37 Goodyear MTRs on 17 x 9 Trailready beadlocks, let me know.

truck won't be on the road till I sell my Defender 110 (which I've had a hoot in, all ye slaggards!) and sorted the truck for an out of province.

it has four runner discs/calipers on both axles, and thus I have no e-brake. Anyone know how to do a propshaft ebrake or something else that will work?

Anyways, till I actually meet up with you guys...

Cheers,

Chris

Welcome aboard Chris! Sounds like you have a great truck there. I'd love to see some pics... care to post a few?

You should come for a trail run with us before you ditch those 37's, they might just come in handy from time to time. We have a couple tall 60's in the club and we seem to manage just fine. Ken's is on 38" and he drives it out to Tofino all the time and has driven it down south of the US as well. I've even gotten use to mine out here on the East Sooke twisties and have realized its not really gonna roll in the corners.

Anyway, come for a meeting and see what you think. Bring the 110 if you like but don't be suprised if it gets "toilet papered" in the parking lot! (kidding)

that is one hell of a truck. I bid you good luck getting it cleared through bc inspection. A guy I worked with brought a slightly lifted toyota mini truck up last year and it was hell. anything over stock will cause issues. Alot of work went into that rig though!

Hey, if you want a good shop referal for getting the out of country inspection done, try these guys:

Marigold Service Ltd
800 Burnside Road West
Victoria, BC V8Z 1N2

(250) 744-5787
marigoldservice.ca‎

They did my from-JDM inspection, no problems. They do it proper, but won't be fussy just for the fact of being fussy. And no, I'm not affiliated with them at all :)

Gents,

Thanks for the hospitality and info last night, and lack of toilet paper on the Defender!

Rob, I'll touch base with you about the wheels, I hope you aren't in a hurry. I might pick your brain sometime about bits of this truck, as I figured there was a fair bit of your sweat and knuckle-skin involved. Two or three years ago you gave me a lot of info over the phone about 1HZs into a 60, etc, and I thank you for it.

asutherland, i live round the corner from Marigold. They did the out of province on the Defender, so I know they'll be okay on the 60, or I think they will.

I have been researching driveshaft parking brakes, ones that bolt onto the output from the transfer case...anyone have any experience with those. not a ton of info on the forums.

i'd love to leave the wheels on for a bit, but figure I better have matched gearing before heading into the bush.

either way, i have to sell the Defender before getting too financially caught up with sorting the 60.

Cheers,

Chris

No hurry at all, future build that would entail bigger tires.

I could give you some tips, the fuel tank had sat for some time and you should run a fair sized fuel filter until it seems clean (small details).

Trying to remeber that conversation, although back in those days I was getting so many calls about that engine and installs its all a blurrr...

How is Tom, long time since we talked and I hope he is doing well...

Good luck with your rig....

I do not think there is a tcase brake aftermarket for the split case and I am pretty sure the last of factory units or long gone from SORs web site.

Factory front drive shaft can be had from John at Radd Cruisers.

Rob

another method is the early 90's honda/acura caliper and disc. Takes some monkeying around, but it's doable.

Ya, I looked at those and they are pricey, but definitely a good alternative.

Not sure why no one has made brackets for those brakes, couple articles on the net of guys using them.

Like jay said, the allpro unit woul work but I would go out on a limb ad have some brakets laser cut and produce a few for the market.

yeah, I've had a setup in the garage ever since the crustacious one moved to oz, never got around to installing it in anything...

once I'm back in a 42 I may finally give it a whirl....

I ordered one of the Tfr case parking brakes from TSM, should be a week away. I hear they are good enough.

MArigold said the lift was not a problem, just make sure the mudflaps are good. I'd like to get some sort of flaps/flares/sill protection on anyway, to keep the body in good shape. it is generally in good shape now.

There is a big RACOR fuel filter with a clear bottom on it, not sure when that went in. I shall keep an eye on it.

Ryan, when I left Victoria you were building a 109 with toyota bits. that still on the books?

Chris

Update.

Well, I don't have much to share on the progress so far, but there has been a bit of headway, and a bunch of you have been round to have a look and offer advice or assistance, which is great. The beast is in the driveway under tarp while I clean up a bit of rust in the tailgate and hatch. Most of the work so far has been tracing broken circuits. Man, I still don't understand the 24/12V thing they did, even though everyone and their dog has explained it to me!

I bought a parking brake that mounts the the output shaft at the back of the tfr case, so will let you know how that goes. it came from the streetrod manufacturing company.

Other major work like regearing has stalled till I sell the Defender, so this could be a while yet.

I intend to help part out the smurf, but in the meantime, there are a couple things I'm looking around for, if anyone has:

dimmer switch for dash lights
heater duct front left side going from the center distribution to the upper left corner of dash.
windshield wiper arms for left hand drive car. mine are from right hand drive. i might just twist them.
the plast surround that fits around the levers etc in the dash. I'll take a photo sometime.

things i found out pre-safety: lift is not a big deal as long as headlights aren't higher than 54 inches, but you must have mudflaps. beadlocks are not illegal here. all this was according to the folks at Marigold, who got it from provincial DOT.

Speaking of photos, sorry I can't post any, my computer won't talk to my camera nicely.

See you all on the 20th.

Chris
