I am thinking you will either have to modify an existing swing out or build one from scratch Look at 4x4 Labs bumper and swing out

Or incorporate a local fab shop

^^^ may sweet talk Stan into modifying/building your carrier as well. Or I hear they are free with a vortec swap ;)

I say build a swing down stinger carrier with torsion spring lift assist right off a new high n tight crossmember

I love that idea. Makes getting the tire out of the way a breeze. Hell it could even double as a tailgating seat in the down position.... Now we're just being silly. I love it.

Not silly at all, you won't like humping that big tire up on a swing out one bit.

Be sure to include dampeners with your torsion setup.
Alas, unload your spare and find the stinger has a mean upper hook.

The only reason I would opt for swing out and not swing down is the 40 inches. With the tail gate down you're still having to step around the tire to load stuff.

If it's got a nice flat plate on the back of it, and it's built right, it could be a 14.5" tall step up for loading.

Youre absolutely right. I need to keep the engineering more simple.

WHat about a tilt/trim mechanism from a boat, to lower and raise the spare tire/trail couch with a switch? :)

Eventually I'll have a swing-down style tire carrier on my truck, but it won't be assisted. It'll simply flip down and face the ground.

How about a swing down mounted to a stout swing out. It will allow access to the rear yet still serve as a swing down when required. All manual, its a spare tire swing down, something that gets used infrequently on most rigs. Something like an actuator or tilt and trim set up requires regular use to keep in good working order. If not cycled on a regular basis they will not work when you need them to.

How bout the budget build ? ;)

Just so happens to be 40" between the wheel wells and ratchet straps are cheap :) yeah yeah bus load of nuns may die in an accident but .....

And 15" height is a tall but good rear drawer/platform height as it matches rear tailgate height

Besides have you priced a matching rim and tire? You may not have any budget left for a swingout lol

Also there is a set of like new 37" toyo mts on nc4x4 looking to trade for 40s ... Just saying... Again

But ill be glad to sell you axles and birfs trail side

That works too Jason. My tire is inside now on one of Jerry's mounts. I eventually plan on a 4x4 labs bumper with some sort of swing out set up.

since youre going to ask :D

boom done.. and sell that spacer so you can buy a trailer hitch instead of air actuated nerf bars :D

yeah i know it brings wheels into the equation but @liljoe had a great price on 17s a week or so back and you can find take offs from 2-400 commonly

Bingo. Also ... considering the ratio of times you open the tail gate vs. times needing a spare, no lifting is good lifting.

You have some catching up to do. (in Winston)

Strange to see 40's on a truck with flares. Are the fenders cut inside the wells? Might wanna be careful testing flex if not. Do you have any idea if the PO ever actually used the truck for the way it was built?

Been doing a lot of thinking on this....

The more I look at the rear fender flares the more I realize that the first big flex will rip them off... My calculations show (granted I'm terrible at Math as Rice can attest to with the rear driveshaft angle discussions on my 40) that about 8 inches of rear travel will fit within the flares.... The 'bump stop' that's currently in place will allow about 13.5"... Me thinks I need to start ripping off the rear flares before I get to the trail, or the tires will. That or get some HUGE bump stops... or yes, Jason, downsize to 37's...
