I'm busy for the next few days, but will be in touch; probably next week. In the mean time, please take some time to do some of the things I suggested above. ^^

Glad you appreciate the help.
I've been driving a bit and checking things. So I don't think I'm hearing the fan roaring. I've also been checking under the car frequently for any signs of leaks but haven't seen any yet.

But I have confirmed that the overheating seems to only happen with the malahat, just that sustained highway speed incline seems to be the trigger. I've driven up Triangle Mountain, down to the breakwater from Colwood and back, and around Colwood, never had the temperature hit halfway during any of that regular driving. I haven't driven on the highway much other than the malahat, but I can say for sure there wasn't any heat problem coming down the malahat from Duncan when I picked it up.

But just for safety I'm looking at doing the whole head maintenance in the near future, any suggestions for where to get the parts for that? I saw RADD motors suggested somewhere but they've got out of stock for their kits on their site.

Also definitely still up for a hand servicing that fan if you're still up for it, I'm available all this week except friday, not sure about next week as I'll have fresh tattoos so I'll be avoiding messy work for a bit after friday

If you're not hearing the fan roaring, then that's definitely a good point to start.

There is no point in replacing the cylinder head if it's in fine shape. In fact, if it's not cracked, it's probably already been replaced. So I'd say start with the fan and see where things go from there before you start ordering expensive parts.

To answer your question though, I bought my cylinder head parts (thought mine was bad but it wasn't) back in the day from a place called jdmparts.ca ; they are in BC and know what you need very well. Since then I've found other sources. Probably the best is Cruiser Addiction - guy's name is Yan. You'll have to wait 2-3 weeks, but his prices will be best. There is also partsouq, amayama and megazip. Shop around for the best price (don't forget to take into account shipping and duty costs for those off shore suppliers). Buy OEM Toyota only. I have a list of all the latest OEM parts you need if you try to source everything yourself.

I'm happy to service the fan hub for you, but I'll need it for 24 hours minimum. That's how long it takes for the remnant of old silicone oil to drain out.

But you should know that removing the fan/hub is a royal PITA. To this day it's my least favorite job on these motors. I can describe to you exactly how to do it, but I'm not going to do it for you (for free anyhow....LOL).

I am free the next couple evenings if you want to pop by with the truck. I can take a look at it and give you some thoughts. I can tell you exactly how to remove the fan hub. You can do it when you have some time, and I'll fix it for you. Or you can fix it yourself - I have a spare one and can show you how, or you can read this to learn how to do it (just read the first few posts - thread goes sideways from there): Blue fan clutch mod...Thread has gone to hell, read at your own risk

Also, if you have not already, be sure to download all the manuals for your truck: Help!

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you, busy month haha.

Been looking at my options and after a drive today I'm pretty sure I need to deal with the fan soon, I'm thinking of just replacing it with an electric just due to the likelihood of being stuck in traffic in the worst conditions for a clutch fan (I just drove from Fishermans Wharf to Colwood and had the terrible luck of hitting every single red light possible. Barely made it home before hitting the red. Waiting for her to cool down so I can top up the rad)

Would you be able to reccomend any electric fans? And if you still have a spare thermometer I'd love to grab that some time this week, I need to get what I can done before work starts up (and then get some work done)

I'd not recommend an electric fan. For a few reasons. A proper working clutch fan draws a few kilo-Watts worth of air. A high end electric fan is just a few 100 Watts. It'll never have the power of a clutch fan (never move as much air). This is why no trucks even to this day are sold with electric fans (just cars). Second reason, the alternators in these are marginal at best (small 55A). Adding a good electric fan will overwhelm your alternator. I've seen a number of guys try electric fans and their overheating issues never end - so the proof is in the pudding. Also, there will be some fab work involved to do it right (a custom shroud).

It's way easier to just put in a new factory fan hub. I've never had troubles with the motor getting hot in any sort of city traffic in mine. In fact, I can barely even get my engine to heat up. So you've got something going on with your truck that you just need to identify and fix. I'm going to say it's a 90% chance it's the fan clutch, your radiator, or thermostat. Or maybe all three.

Yes, I have a good thermostat you can have if you want.

I also have a Chinese aluminum radiator that actually cools really well. I didn't like the fitment, so decided to re-core an OEM one instead. I thought the aluminum rad was leaking also, but when I took it out I realized it was just a loose top hose clamp. You could get it pressure tested just to be sure. Anyhow, it did cool really well! It was this type from Ebay. Make me an offer if you're interested: FIT Toyota Land Cruiser LJ70 LJ71 LJ73 LJ77 LJ78 2LTE 2.4TD ALUMINUM RADIATOR | eBay

Definitely interested in the rad, I was actually looking at that model. I'm broke right now but would happily make an offer in a few weeks when I'm working again.

I believe I found the issue with my cooling, faulty thermostat. Has a dent that makes it sit crooked, and from the wear on it it's been catching and only opening on one side by a few millimeters, so really the thermostat just hasn't been opening nearly enough to work properly. I'm just gonna run without a thermometer for now but I'd live to pick up the one you've got and that rad in the near future

DON'T run without a thermostat!! The coolant won't even flow through the radiator, it'll just go straight back into the engine (because there is a bypass the t-stat normally blocks off when it opens)!!! I'm gone camping as of Sunday afternoon, but you're welcome to my extra t-stat if you can drop by before then. You can text me at two five o - eight five seven - 0 nine five 1. I'll give you my address by text.

Alright so just an update.

Thanks so much to GTSSportCoup, that thermostat was a huge help.

Long story short, the thermostat that was put in before I got the LC was entirely the wrong one. I'm pretty sure someone just got a thermostat for an LC from lordco and didn't check that it would work in the RHD model. (I almost made the same mistake but caught it because they gave me a gasket that was entirely different from mine)

Old thermostat is entirely wrong, it's offset so essentially my thermostat had been half open at all times and probably just coolant going through that bypass. New thermostat made an immediate difference, LC runs a good 15% cooler.

Was still losing coolant, but over time and not from heat. After about 45 minutes of driving it fills the reserve tank and starts overflowing. I figured I'd replace the radiator cap since that seemed like an issue of the cooling system not keeping pressure.

Now, I was definitely right on this BUT it also seems it was the rad cap going as well as possibly being the wrong model as well.

I replaced the rad cap, immediately I knew the pressure problem was better, because the radiator sprung a couple small leaks. Picking up a new radiator tomorrow from GTSSportCoup, going to get that in ASAP (patched with some JB Kuickweld for now, which has held great and no new leaks, I put the old cap back on too just to not put pressure on the rad and risk more leaks)

Now I have one question, which rad cap is correct for the RHD LJ78's? I have a new one that's the standard design I've seen on most cars but I also saw this one with this extra extension on it, is this the correct cap? Or is the standard one I've got?

Also just for the time being to not be spending $20 on coolant a month I rigged up this secondary coolant tank. Around when my temperature goes up is also when the reserve tank starts overflowing so I just wanted to try and save some.kf the coolant I've been losing. (I stop as soon as the temperature starts rising, but since the new thermostat it hasn't risen above halfway which is a huge difference) haven't had any temperature spikes to test it yet though.

OK, here is how you find yourself LJ78 parts and what they cross to in North America. This will let you walk into any autoparts store and get what you need. Go here and find the Toyota part number (for your rad cap say): Toyota LAND CRUISER LJ78 Car & Auto OEM Parts | 54926

Then, go here and paste that part number in, and search North America. It'll tell you all the vehicles the part crosses to: ToyoDIY.com

Please do that yourself so you learn how ^^.

When I did it, I found the part number is 16401-71010 . It crosses to all the north american 60 and 80 series landcruisers (and the BJ70 too):

s***. I think I need to do some studying.

Thank you master Yoda.

One other thing I should add. The parts that are Japan models only can be ordered from Partsouq, Amayama and even Megazip. Or just search the part number on Ebay or google and various vendors will come up. Nothing is more than a week away.

Or if you can wait a bit more, some of the best (OEM Toyota) pricing I've found is from a guy called Yan at Cruiser Addiction in eastern Canada. Great guy and ordering through him you avoid duty costs etc. Cruiser Addiction Just email him for quotes on parts you need.

Update again: thanks to GTSSportCoup for the radiator, I got it installed Saturday night, filled it Sunday morning (idled it for half an hour to get the bubbles out, actually struggled to get it up to running temp for that, I got it halfway there, checked my coolant level, checked the temp again and it had dropped back down)

Tried the malahat again today, where I was normally stopping to cool off before I hit my point if no return towards too hot it actually dropped below running temp, so safe to say the issues have been solved with the right thermostat, rad cap and a new radiator.

Gonna be checking it religiously for a while just in case, but it's running fantastic now.

I ordered a new Fuel Filter Primer to fix the shakey start up, and a cupholder unit to celebrate the major issue being solved.

Ordered a $100 set of bars from Amazon, and a basket and extension for $200 from Princess Auto. Pretty happy with this.

Might get a second extension to get that full roof length.

Then I just have to decide if I want to shift it to one side or keep it centered

Me again, had to make a new account, couldn't log in to that one for some reason. LC is now problem free. Tire balancing fixed my highway shake, haven't lost a drop of coolant since installing the new rad system (and my 2nd overflow rig)

Now all that's on my list is an oil change and adding a new power line for a higher amperage cig port for some accessories above 10amps.

Right on! You can get a Baldwin BD7029 oil filter from Lordco if you want one off the shelf. I highly recommend Shell Rotella T4 (non synth) 15W40. Can be bought on sale regularly at Canadian Tire in 20 litre pails.

Been a while since I was on here. Cruisers been running good, uncovered a new/old problem though. The highway shake I was having has returned very intermittently, but a new issue has revealed the culprit.

Thought it was just how unbalanced the tires were, but when I had the tires balanced, also found my rear right brake hadn't been engaging. Gave it some love taps to knock the crud out of it which fixed it, for a while at least.

Few days ago she started feeling sluggish, not much, was still going the speed limit fine, but something felt off. Realized today that the brake had jammed up again, this time engaged, and wore right through the pad. So next project: replacing the rear brake calipers and rotors
