Call Ted (or his son Tod) at engnbldr.com, there is no doubt he can quickly and easily help you id which chain you need. He also sells all the timing parts and from what I have seen online, his prices are very good.

Thank you Cory...I am towing it down yonder...and let mechanic determine what year head...he says it should not matter as long as we have block size,year?....Well here goes i will keep y;all posted...C

Giving my brothers an update on my truck...I had the timing chain replaced,...Valves were fine...And i had the carb rebuilt...The guy did an awesome job..So now i am gonna sell this rig and get a 4runner..I really want a 3.4 if i can find one in my price range...There are 3.0's everywhere...If i get one...I may do an extended vehicle coverage in case?

Yea why did the chain break? I assume the wrong head? I wonder if a bad cam/bearings or something would do it..........it would almost seem like something needed to applying pressure or wobbling?

But cruiser i hear ya...I can not rule out the head wobble possibility ?.what ever held the tension on the chain he said was like it was hand tightened ..Which did not surprise me in the least(old mechanic was a goober) I am just gonna park it and sell it...I am not taking any chances...C

Were the chain guides replaced? Most often, the problem with the chain is that the guides have worn which allows the chain to eat into the cover and wear - breaking the chain.

This was the second major project on my '85 many moons ago - the first being replacing the clutch. It isn't exactly rocket science, but it does require you to be methodical and attentive to what you are doing.

These engines are tough.....drive it;). If it was not tight then I could understand why it broke

getting little bags and labeling the bolts goes a long ways......more so if you have to walk away for a little while. Over tighting bolts and getting them mixed up is a common problem. Other than that its a 2  job.

Yep! My method was a sheet of plywood and placed everything out in sequence along it - taping the small parts to it. Worked very nicely!
