Wrenching on my Junk
P1060201.webp

After my bent front axle fiasco in Death Valley last November I have been wanting to replace my worn spindles. Maybe this is contributing to the truck's tendency to wander within the white lines on the long boring highway
ATEB said this is indicated by circular groves cut inside the thrust washer. Apparently if the spindle is worn it can will allow the inner bearing ring to move under high side loads even when properly torqued.

Well I ordered a new set from Akella (mud vendor) last Christmas ( i.e., from Santa) and it has been warm enough here to install them. I torque my wheel bearings to 43 ft-lbs and checked them will the spring gauge as per FSM, which got between 4-5 lbs bearing preload (FSM is 1-7 lbs,), without the caliper on.

I will see if this helps....

This made a noticeable difference on my truck, same symptom.

I need a set of these too, just hope I make it to Moab and back this weekend with the old spindles....

I did mine a few weeks ago. I need to get under and check toe-in though, as mine is still fairly vague in the steering department. Spindles, wheel bearings, and tie rods were all replaced so I know there's no slop there now.

My next rig will have narrower tires....

Ahhh... Well, I suppose it did get a bit worse in this department when I went from 285s to 315s. Shortly after the other work was completed.

Looked at many locally - nothing from Mark yet, if ever.

There was a newly imported 81 at Ateb today. a 94 or something with a Brave Auto decal on the windshield... Emerald green. Nice.

Added to the new spindles -- a fresh set of Toyota rebuilt calipers - the rotors and pads still had tons of meat left on them

Doubt a 24 valve will be that cheap - too much international demand

1995 (first 24 valve) - with low mileage, Grade 4, locked are selling for way more than that in the Japanese auction.
There was a nice 93 with low km's sold last October that went to BC for around $13k.

Was it this one ?

Nope. That's IanB's new truck. He does not receive it till mid year IIRC

Sorry that one in the picture is a 1993 not 1995.

Can someone send me some phone numbers of the owners of these units - I am wondering who they are getting them from in Japan.
I have been on Brave's wait list since October last year - -
