New rules for importing diesels

Just heard some horrible news from some friends looking to buy a diesel: As of 2007 it will be illegal to import diesel vehicles from other countries into the US. I am going to search for more info and will post it as I can.


I couldn't find anything more than talk about the ULSD- ultra low sulfur diesel req's starting in 2007. Except that VW is not producing the Jetta, Golf Beetle or Passat as a TDI in 2007, they're continuing to make the 2006 model for another year.

Seems that older vehicles would be exempt even if this was true.

I hope VW continues to sell the TDI's in Canada. Can't see them abondoning the market as it is pretty big. They will just make the vehicles comply.

Hmm... that would be really rotten. I suppose that means that if I'm going to get a Dieel 70 series I better get on it

Somehow I doubt VW will stop. Reason, europe has had the low sulfer diesel long before we did and diesel vehicles are the most common over there.

VW has already confirmed that they're not selling any 2007 model year diesel vehicles, with the exception of the Toureg. They couldn't get them to comply, but they'll be back for 2008.

They're going to make a bunch of extra 2006's to try to make up some of the difference.
