Long story short I acquired this 4Runner in trade for some suspension and fab work I'll be doing for a friend. I figured it was the perfect chance to design and build parts for the 1st gen 4Runners. The plans are, front and rear bumpers, rock sliders, some sort of tube in the fenders to act a little as a flare but mostly for strength against trees, they'll be tied into the bumpers and sliders.

Its an 86 so it has a solid axle swap done to it...some of the work is a bit sketchy so I'll be going through it...grinding off and redoing quite a few welds  Its got 4in lift springs all around and some 37in Maxxis Creepy Crawlers. It came to me with the winch and a Fail-Gear winch mount...the 2nd time I've had to work with one of these and I'm even less impressed this time...horribly made, very weak, no gussets, the list goes on.

At this point I already added 1 piece of tube to the front..

Today I bent up a stinger and welded it on...all the tube is 1.75 dia .120 wall ERW.

So far thats it..depending on how motivated I am I may work on it more tonight...more pictures to come.

Got it basically done, I have to make a couple gussets here and there and I'm debating about tying it into the front body mount to make it stronger. Then I have to pull the winch off, pull the bumper off the 4Runner, finish up all the welds, paint it and throw it back on, not bad.

You can see the braces I added that tie the outer ends of the bumper into the winch plate.

Ya sellout! What about the 60?? :D Let's see what you do with this thing, you have my eye. It'll be nice to have you posting in here w/ tech/etc.

*Nice to seeyou exploring the value of a 4Runner, but maybe it's just that I am a little biased. ;)

Haha, oh I still have the cruiser, I'll never sell that thing. You can see a little of the back of it in the last picture of the first post. This is more of a build it up, wheel it for a little while and sell it so I can pay for a 5.3 in the 60. :D

Very nice. Curious what you will do about a front license plate?

Seeing pics like this makes me want to be out in the shop fabbin' stuff.

Got it mostly finished up today..there are a couple little things I'll add once it gets warmer, but its basically finished.

The flash on the camera really makes it look like a horribly failed attempt at a paint job..I blame the cold and poor lighting where I painted it :meh:

what are you using for a bender?
I like the bumper a lot! youre still going to smash your corner lenses though on some trails

Its a JD2 Model 32.

Yeah it would be nice if the tube stuck out further at the sides, but to make the tube fenders work they had to be in a little tighter. The lights are still well protected. I'll sacrifice a light to save a fender.

Better pictures...
