New old fart here....or at least getting old..

First official post.

Vehicle: 1996 FZJ80

I've owned this truck for about 5 years now and have not done a thing to it accept oil changes, tires, brakes, and drive the living crap out of it. I've been 4.5 feet deep in the Brazos river (chasing duck decoys, and just playing submarine), through any number of mud holes including the "atomic" mud in Houston. My most recent adventure was a four month stent in south Louisiana doing insurance claims. A lot of crappy, corrosive salt water passes through flooded (and baracaded) underpasses and close to the broken levy romps.

This truck has endured more than all the cars I 've had before it put together and just runs like a swiss watch. I laugh at ****s and american made pickups grunting like old men taking atheir final dump while thye try to pull there little bass boats out of the lake. Once I had to tie on to a Dodge Hemi and pull both truck and trailer out before they samk.

I really love this 80 but it has 225000 miles on it and now gives a little puff on cold starts once every ten or so starts. It looks like time to sell and get either a new FJ, or a 100. I'm interested in opinions about the new FJ vs the 100.

So, to all you faithful cruiser heads! Let me hear from ya!

Crusherdan

Welcome!
sounds like you have a good one.

(drop the weird color font, though...)

Folks in this here forum will tell you to stick with the 80 of course. You may want to ask about the FJ and 100 in their respective sections.

Nice to have you with us!

oh, and I don't know about signing out with "crusherdan" we have a "CruiserDan" already, and he is the Uber Parts Wiz on the site. He has us all by the -errr... throat- and you don't want to upset him as he'll stick pins in your truck's voodoo doll... Nice guy otherwise, though... :)

Thanks, e. Point taken on the color. And I guess since I come here for advice and not to pick a fight, I'll give way to CruiserDan. Don't need to piss off the head  .

Have you driven a tocama??
if that is roomy enough for you then the fj will be ok.
if not look at the 100, or just rebuild or replace the engine in you 80.
Dave.

I agree with Paedrus, look at revamping your 80, or replacing it with a super low mile used 80. They are out there. I love my 100, but it's no 80 for sure. If fixing your 80 up or replacing with another 80 are out, then my choice would for sure be a 100 though. The FJ, while a great vehicle I'm sure, is just not of the same overbuilt nature of a 80 or 100 series.

Welcome aboard and by the way :flipoff2:
He signed off with CrusherDan not CruiserDan.
Unless I missed it and he is quick to edit.
Maybe he will be spared CDans voodoo needle to the HG;)
No shortage of old farts here.
This thread is useless without pics:bounce:
96's were the best year.

Welcome. You have found a site with a wide array of backgrounds represented in the membership. Fortunately, as I have found, most of them know their vehicles well and how to keep them that way for countless miles, certainly more than 225,000 that you may have concerns about.
Check out the "search feature" and do not miss the FAQ sections that provide great information for folks just joining the site. I have used many of the pre-written online guides here with much success.

Look forward to your many hours spent reading and chatting here!

Welcome Dan

Perhaps your puff of smoke is just due to slightly stuck ring packs? Maybe a couple AutoRx treatments would loosen them up? You'll improve your mileage a little with the better compression, too.

If you are going to hang out here with us, you'll have to stay out of the mud :) We h8mud, remember :grinpimp:

I assume you are in the Houston area?

I think we're all going to have to wait a few years before the FJ verdict is weighed. Personally I would go with a known (80 or 100) rather than an unknown. But that's just me...I hate being on the front end of (ie "paying end" that is) anything new and unproven...

...or get the FJ, put it through it's paces and report back to the rest of us :D

Are you kidding me, 225,000 that's it. That would mean I've only 6 months left on mine. I'm thinking more like 340,000 before considering replacement, actually more like a support vehicle.

      , I feel so loved!

Welcome aboard :flipoff2:

Keep the 80 and get a 100.

:D

Old Fart,
If you're interested in diagnosing the smoke on cold starts then ask again and you'll get some opinions.

If you're seriously considering the new FJ then head to the FJC section.
If you're seriously considering a 100 then head to the 100 section.

You say you love the 80 and you posted this in the 80 section so it's unclear to me what feedback you are requesting.
