Hi, I'm new to the forums and am looking to buy a 1973 FJ40 here in Kansas. I've always been a big fan of them and now I might have the chance to finally get one.
Q - guy thats selling it, says it won't run due to a vacuum advance for the distributor. He also said it has a belt on it that is too big and has had problems finding one that fits at O'Riley's. It does have the stock motor. What do you guys think of these two things?? If you know of any FJ's for sale locally here in Kansas let me know, don't really wanna spend over $5k.

Thanks for all the help, I look forward to future use of the forums.

Engines are basically a big tractor engine. They can sit for a long time, and usually can be running after some troubleshooting. My ol' blue sat for 10 years. I rebuilt the carb and got it running pretty quick.

Vacuum issue can make a real rough idle for a 40, but should not stop it from being able to start. Belt will not stop it from running.

The big issue in this area is rust. Cancer. Take some pics, and we can tell you what to look for.

Price - you get what you pay for......

My FJ45 sat for over 20 years and had actual gallons of water in the engine, trans and tcase and I got it started in the middle of winter in wyoming.. Heat/cool cycle over years of sitting in a field.

It should at least cough to life before purchasing or the price goes down significantly.
Disconnect the vacuum advance, plug the port on the carb and take it out of the possible leaks. it'll run without vacuum advance. take some panty hose with you to make a temporary belt to fire it up.

Cat dealer has belts that will fit as do many implement dealers. YOu might want to see if someone in the club might be able to go look at it with you. Probably best to introduce yourself and where your at. That will help the club out to direct you to someone that can look at the thing with you.
