Hello all, my name is Tylan Selby in Chico, CA. The instructions said to post an intro in the Tech section, so here goes!
I recently purchased my first Land Cruiser, a model year 2000 Grey 100 Series with 284,629 miles. I am no stranger to Toyotas and have been daily driving a 1993 Toyota Pickup 4x4 DLX since 2007. It was the first vehicle I ever purchased back in High School. I still love that truck, but now with 2 small daughters the extra cab is no longer sufficient. I decided on a 100 series over a 4th Gen 4runner V8 after many hours of online research. Partly influencing my decision is the time I have spent living and working in Australia where the Land Cruiser is the undisputed king of off-roading.
My plan for this rig is to be a family camping and adventure vehicle, and will likely be used for road trips and off and on as a daily driver in the rotation of my other vehicles. At this time I do not intend to build a serious rock crawler with this LC as it will be used probably 70/30 highway and dirt and I want to maintain the comfortable ride that these trucks are known for. That being said, I may eventually go as large as 33's with the appropriate lift and regearing if necessary.
Other eventual wish list mods (open to suggestions):
Front bull bar bumper
Rear bumper
Sliders
Roof Rack
That's all way down the line. First I need to get the truck baselined and to a point where I feel confident that this high mileage truck isn't going to leave me stranded. I was apprehensive about purchasing a vehicle with such high mileage and age, but was persuaded by testimony of Land Cruiser owners on this forum and elsewhere, and I plan to do the wrenching myself. The previous owner was the second owner and had the car since 60k. He kept great service records and receipts over the 21 years he had the truck. He claimed to have used the LC as a commuter in the Sacramento area with little offroad use, and the overall appearance of the vehicle as well as the owner suggests such.
The service records indicate a mostly on time maintenance schedule over it's life with the major repairs being over the last 100k miles or so:
Steering rack
Power steering pump
Front passenger axle shaft
Radiator and hoses
Fan clutch
Serpentine belt and pulleys
Starter
Heater T's
MAF sensor
Coil packs
Valve cover gasket
Brake rotors and pads (more than once)
I say mostly on time because in all the service records nowhere did I find evidence of the timing belt being replaced, and this truck should be on it's 3rd for it's age and mileage. The owner claimed it was replaced 100k ago and was due again, and lowered the sale price to reflect that. Is it possible that the truck made it this long on the original T-belt? Needless to say that will be my first project and I am not planning to drive it much before then. It drove great for the 100 mile trip home after picking it up. Temp and oil pressure looked good, accelerated and braked fine, tracked straight down the road. There was a slight hum above 70mph but nothing alarming, and sometimes a small clunk when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse. I read that it may be the driveshaft U-joints? Also there is grease on the Driver's CV boot.
Is there a 100 series baselining thread on this forum? What else should I replace while I'm in there? Is there a comprehensive parts diagram online? Where do people order parts online?
I am looking forward to being a part of this amazing community of Land Cruiser enthusiasts!
Thanks,
Tylan
