Beo I suspect he is part-time with automatic locking hubs. I have a JDM sales brochure that shows something like that. I can't read Japanese worth a damn but the pictures are nice...:hillbilly:

prossett,

I'll trade you a 6-pack of the beer of your choice for that hood ornament.

I was just checking on page 18, dang..that rolls Royce, Benz hood ornament cost between $100 -$130.00 USD :flipoff2: :grinpimp:

Been busy changing fluids and getting window tinting changed, but I'll get your shifters pic soon, and the glove box computer code after I do the brake pads and put in new shocks. I noticed a diagnostics plug-in on the PS firewall, so that goes straight to the chip behind the glove box.

Funny thing is it's top-of-the-line but no cruise control and no ABS... weird. Is it hard to install cruise control?

MoGas, the little hoses thingie on the air filter cover I've been told measures the flow of air, as you guessed, and it gives a warning when the filter is too clogged - a good thing for this part of the world. Mine however, has the electrics disconnected and just lying there under it so I'm going to try plugging it back in and see what happens.

Beowulf, 2 six-packs is real currency, bud - I'll be going round scrap yards this weekend looking for the stock winch, so I'll ask about hood ornaments for you. Should be light and easy to post, and it'll be my X'Mas prezzie for you... Boy, I miss Christmas!!! :frown:

Here's a pic from underneath, should there be anything that catches your eyes from that angle.

I was kinda hoping to get yours :D but I'll be happy with one from a breaker (aka junk yard.) FYI, I have a link that has a couple of pictures showing the underside of the bonnet and how the mascot is attached. Let me know if you need the pics.

NO CATS either!

Does it have dual inlets into the front of the resonator that is under the passenger footwell?

This truck is like the Inverted Jenny stamp of the 80 series world ;p

Yes, it has dual inlets into the front of the resonator.

Tonight I'm visiting the scrapyards to look for a stock winch, wish me luck!

99% are petrol, yes they are plentiful but it's real pain exporting privately. There are plenty of companies that do it, though, and the city of Sharjah is one of the world's main hub for used car transactions - many from Japan, and heading for the ex-Russian republics and Africa. Search for "Sharjah + cars + export" and you should find several well-organized companies. Here in the scrapyards it's full of stock parts, in good shape and cheap.

For example, this evening I found my stock winch: USD 243, at the first yard I stopped at.

Now don't go thinking it's something you want to tap into, cause it would be very very hard to set up some sort of feeder system moving parts into the USA... most expats here have thought of it at one point.

What you'd have to do to make it work (and there's lots of other cool cars too!) is come down here with enough cash to fill a container, and these guys are hagglers and make dishonest used car parts dealers in the States look like amateurs, and then hook up with a shipping company to ship it out for you directly. You'd have to supervise the whole thing personally from start to finish, or when you open up your container at destination it'll be full of camel sh!t instead of your parts.

You guys think it's a good idea for me to install the stock winch back in for the USD 243? Haven't bargained yet, either. It weighs a ton and I probably will never use it as Elsie's too cool a truck to rough in the dunes. I have an 83 GMC 1/2 ton that I wheel and bang around. The only reason I went looking for it is because there's supposed to be one, and it's not...

BUY!!!

Will you be able to bring the Cruiser with you when you return to the USA? If yes, then buy it!

I know! That's my gut reaction, too!!!!! :D :D :D

Common sense unfortunately said "think it over first"...

1. heavy up front, harder on suspension, extra fuel consumption

2. no real need, only family picnics and moderate sand tracks planned

3. only one battery installed, and no plans to go to two

Ah, WTF, the plan for this truck is to keep it full stock, and it's a beauty - and so full stock means it's got a winch, darn it!!!

No, won't take it with me unfortunately. People who have tried have paid dearly since the list of required modifications to get it in line with either US or EU regulations costs about as much as the car itself. A new one is more feasible as they tend to be for the most part the same specs, and we don't pay taxes here and prices are lower.

Don't bring back the whole truck. Just the parts you can't get here. Bring back lots of those. :-) Seriously.

I sent a couple of mid-sized boxes to a buddy in Afghanistan. USPS was <$50 for a 40 lb box. You can put a lot of hood ornaments, air filter clogged sensor hardware and a couple of those console refrigerators into a 40lb box.

Try it and see who bites. Put together a box with 1 console fridge, 1 hood ornament and 1 airbox differential pressure meter in it. Put said box on Ebay and tell the crowd reading this thread.

If you can get factory winches for $250 and sell them for $800 they might be worth shipping, but those wouldn't fit in a 'goody box'.

Same with Ambulance doors. I think the hatch/tailgate setup is more functional, but some here might spend nicely for the novelty of the ambulance doors.

I'm not saying to part out your truck. But if you have bone yards to pick through full of this stuff, I think there is a market.

We have Cruiserdan for US spec parts, Mot in Japan getting us JDM parts... You could be our middle east market parts connection if you wanted to.

Why not bring back a bunch of parts that are "packed" to look like a Land Cruiser?.....;)

I just left Qatar. Never saw any yards but plenty of Cruisers. I wanted the subtank myself.

Sorry it took a few days, but here's the info on the computer and the pic of the shifter.

Mogas, the computer behind the glove box reads:

Engine Control
89661 - 60210
211000 - 1130 12V

Beowulf, the shifter pic is not that clear, but the transfer case lever has only 3 positions. Top-most default is H, straight down to N, lift and down further to L4. On the dash is the H4.

The gear shifter is the usual PRND2L, plus an overdrive button on the left of the shaft.

As for moving parts around, believe me every expat at one stage thinks about it. This is probably the best place to find semi-old luxury cars wrecked or simply abandoned in scrapyards; there's no rust at all, and people tend to have easy money to flush away and a strong fetish for always driving the latest models. The problem is not about finding the parts, it's the dealing and getting them home that is.

I haven't been back for the winch yet, but I haven't forgot to look for the hood decorations...

Hood decorations found, but they're new. From the scrappies you've got to buy the entire hood...
