Hello all!
I just purchased a '95 with 230k miles on it for $2000 as kind of a project vehicle. I've been wanting a LC for a long time now and started looking a few months ago.
First thing I realized was that there aren't many out there for sale and the ones that are go pretty fast. The second thing I realized was that if I wanted one in my price range (less then $4000), it was probably going to need some work done of some kind.
After missing out on one for $3000 by 15 minutes and walking away from another for $3000 because of body damage and a possible suspect transmission, I pulled the trigger on this one after a long test drive.
There were some issues right off the bat I noticed. First, the right side burfield clicked when turning. OK I can handle that....I think. The passenger side mirror was gone. And the interior was trashed. Not mangled but very dirty. Beyond that, everything seemed OK. The engine sounded and ran better then I expected. The transmission was smooth. All the electronics worked (except the lighrer) and the body was in good shape.
I was technically buying from the original owner. However, it was a hand-me-down and the son didn't believe in cleaning. The dad paid for all repairs and maintenance (and even a new vehicle).
First thing I did was clean it up, about six hours worth. Then ordered new CVs and a knuckle rebuild kit with wheel bearings. The front rotors were new according to dad so I'll keep those. Fixed a power steering leak on one of the hoses and replaced a cracked hose on top of the motor that goes into the valve cover ( not sure what it's called).
I drove it to work for week while I waited for parts to come in to see if anything else sprang up. Nothing Did, so I tore into the axle over the weekend.
Lots of cussing and over two rolls of towels later I have the drivers side back together. The passenger side axle shaft had the dredded ring of death right at the inner seal. So, she still sits on stands while a wait for the new one to come in. Hopefully it comes with the retainer pin because I broke the other one trying to get it in the new burfield. If not I may have to track one down.
First question. What would cause the ring/groove on the axle? Is there something else I should consider before installing the new shaft so I'm not replacing it again in the near future?
Other then the HG potentially going what else should I be planning for with such a high mileage LC?
Thanks for reading and for any input.
Matt.
