New Front Bumper... Finally Mounted and Removed

Got my new bumper from Golden State Motorsports.

Sorry for the messy garage in the background.

I am playing with paint colors. I have pretty much decided on gunmetal for starters. Sorry for the flash in the center but you get the general idea

They shipped it primed white and as you can see I will have a little bit of sanding and some touch up priming before I do the entire bumper. I hope to get it cleaned up and painted this weekend. Might even get it mounted if the rain will hold off.

You can also see the hoop in the back ground of the first picture. They shipped it un-welded which will let me place myself (once I get the welder wired) and also saved me freight charges since it was small enough to ship UPS.

It is built off of a Trail Gear winch plate with wings added to it. The wings are gusseted in the back and the bumper is pretty beefy. I will post some pictures of it once I get it all painted and mounted.

I can't wait to see this thing mounted up, I like the look. I am curious to see how the turn signal lights look once on.

Couple of quick questions if you don't mind...Is this for your 90 pickup? Also, about how much does it weigh?

Snobdds, yes this is going onto my 90 pickup. It has a stinger that goes with it but I have to wait until i get my 220V outlet in so I can weld it on. I shipped it at 80 lbs, but it actually tips the scale at about 65-70 lbs.

As far as the turn signals, I picked up a couple types at the parts store and when I got them home I decided that I need something just a little different. I spent some time checking and now I know what I am looking for so I will return these tomorrow and see if I can run down the ones I am looking for.

I really want to put it on tomorrow, but I have to get the turn signals sorted out first..

I like that bumper, ans these guys are based out of Sacratomato, which is a few hours' drive from home for me. I may be looking into one of these.
How much was it?

Well, I spent tonight studying the turn signal situation. I have a pair of new corner markers and some 1157 bulbs and sockets that I have been playing with. I have picked a socket that i like because it is very minimalistic, problem is that it was made for a tail light that allowed the lense to be removed to change the bulb, ie. the socket is 1.01" in Dia and the bulb is .99", so to have any room the base wouldn't be able to hold the bulb in place, so I need to make a base for the socket to mount in that can be removed with the socket during bulb changes.

My plan is to get a piece of sheet styrene and make a base to mount the socket to and then drill and tap a couple 3mm holes to mount the base to the modified housing. I need to pick up some sheet styrene at the LHS to play with and start working on modifying the housing to make sure the bulbs won't sit to deep inside.

Pictures tomorrow, I hope.

Oh and Chuck the bumper was $500 plus shipping. If you call the number on their web site You will get the towing service, ask for Steve and he will Take care of you. Just so he knows i am trying to get this out for Him, tell Him You saw The one that he sold to Matthew in TN. (I'm not getting anything from them, just want them to know that their first shipped bumper is getting some attention) I am hoping to convince the :princess: that I need an XRC8 to throw on it to help finish it off.

500!?!?!? that's a killer price!
I appreciate the tip!

Well, I am still not sorted on the turn signal reworking. I have bought several different kinds of sockets in an effort to get what I am after and I cannot get it trimmed down to fit right, sooo, I think I may try my hand at fiberglass this weekend. Anybody got any pointers. I think I can put some foil on the lamp housing and use that to form against and then glass the socket into it so that I have something that fits snugly and that can be removed.

I know I am way over thinking this, but I just haven't found a fit I like and I have only found one socket that is the size I am looking for, but it isn't big enough to seat properly once the hole is cut out for the 1157 bulb.

I hope I can get something going tomorrow on the marker lights and maybe have them in and the bumper mounted this weekend. Fingers Crossed.

Update...

So I picked up some fiberglass and got a test run in on the lights. Once I know everything is going to go together like I want then I will post a how I did it post. Anyway so far I am happy. This one needs the edges cut down and a little paint but so far so good.

housing trimmed

And the glassed in socket. It is removable for replacing the bulbs.

More to come later tonight I hope.

Sorry Bumper isn't mounted yet, BUT

If it wasn't 25 degrees with a 11 degree windchill it would be.

I got my marker lights all ready to mount so I just need to wire them in and bolt on the bumper.

Just for kicks here is the breakdown of my marker light conversion.

First I glassed up the back of the housing.

While that was drying I got my socket ready

This particular socket is made for a metal housing, so I soldered a ground wire onto the housing.

Once the glass was dry I used a 3/4" step bit to drill out the hole and glass in the socket.

I used the dremel to open up the hole in housing (see previous post) then trimmed down the rough fiberglass mount and threw on a little duplicolor bed liner to hide the rough shape of the fiberglass and popped them into the housings.

I used two 3mm screws to hold the new socket housings to the original marker housing and TA-DA.

I have checked both sockets for parking and turn and have them marked so now I just need to tear apart the front facade and get all the wiring sorted and bolt up the bumper. If I get a nice afternoon this week I will get it done, otherwise it will probably be next weekend. I am so ready to get it mounted :bounce::bounce:

I need to get my 1040 filed so I can get a winch on the way to round out the package.

Got home tonight and once the little princess goes to bed I'm going out to get the factory bumper off and make sure i got what i need to wire up the new turn signals. Bumper should be on tomorrow before lunch, unless i get a wild hair and try and bolt it on in the dark tonight. Its pretty mild here tonight so if I have the hardware it may be on before bed....

News not so Good.

Well, I am kind of bummed out... I got the stock bumper off and got the new GSM into place with one bolt in to make sure it was up to the correct height and it doesn't fit very well, well it would bolt on, but I am not happy.

I am not going to post any pictures right now until I hear back from the guy I ordered it from. Hope you all understand, just don't want to be one of those, "well you should talk to the company before....." Posts.

Hope to hear back soon and then I will post up the pictures. I sure am glad I didn't pretzel the old one in celebration before I did the test fit. Well on the bright side, I can replace the grill and get my new turn signals in:meh:

I had it shipped at 80# but it actually comes in around 65#.

Bolted up and Taken back off...

Well i got in contact with the guy i bought the bumper from and I am not sure how all that is going to go, but he doesn't seem too concerned about what may come, so here are a couple pictures.

Needless to say I am not too happy with the way it fits.

What say you guys? Should I be upset? I've seen pictures of these on other trucks and the gaps weren't this bad, even the seller said so.

Oh and sorry if the pics are small, the princesses have both computers so i am on my phone.

that is a cool bumper, too bad the gap is so big. What did you pay for the bumper? Do you have a body lift on your truck?

I don't know if you can weld but here is one option:
make an adapter spacer plate that bolts on to the frame and then bolt the bumper on to it. Or add more steel below the center and drill new mounting holes to move it up.

I would see what kind of room you need for a winch in there before moving it up any.

Another option would be to weld steel on the back of the bumper lip that sticks up 2-3" to fill in the gaps between the body and bumper.

Other than the space I like that bumper.
