New FJ45 Owner

I have both bed sides, front panel, tailgate and rear valence which are rusted but in repairable condition that I could sell.

If you could talk Miker into making you one of his kick a$$ floors and a set of wheel wells, you'd have a pretty good start. I have the original wheel wells also, but they are a little rusty and Miker's looked awesome. I also have all of the cross braces that you would need.

PM me if you are interested and would like a bunch of pics.

Nice looking truck BTW.

Looks like we are in the same boat. I also am planning a new 350 crate motor w/ T-350 rebuild. I was planning on installing a Edelbrock crate motor but even with a great discount(neighbor) a 350 250 hp is about $1000.00 cheaper. The truck has a t-350 tranny which I think I will have rebuilt. I am also installing a Ididit tilt column w/ new cable shifter. When I am finished with all of this, back to Mark for a power steering conversion. What the heck it's only$$$$. Nice truck by the way , 8k is a good deal. Have you been pricing crate motors? What's the best price you can find? I am in LA also.

Mike,

I've seen your truck over at Mark's a few times, very nice 45. Looks like we will have twins. I live about 2 miles south of Venice down the PCH.

Best price I've found is scoggin-dickey out of Texas. I've bought a half dozen motors from them over the last 15 years, all have worked out well. I did buy one of the 300 HP motors once, but more HP = more heat and harder to cool and I thought that the transfercase was going to grenade when I floored it and barked 35's in 2nd. Personally, I like the 250HP Goodwrench motor for a Cruiser but hot motors are fun. The high performance ones have the nicer one piece main seals and I like the newer valve covers more. They are also a higher quality and I think they would last longer. One of my buddies is a GM dealer service manager, most of this is straight from him.

GM Goodwrench Crate Engines: 5.7L / 350CI V8

I've seen a few buy it now on ebay for $1250 ish

Cruise by and check out mine. Let me know if you need a hand, I work from home and could use a diversion now and then.

I really appreciate the offer, but I am leaning towards Aqualu and light duty wheeling at this point, Todd at Aqualu is a really nice guy and I like his products and engineering - I used them on my last project and was very pleased. I'll be going back east at some point and the fact it won't rust makes a lot of sense to me.

Hello, Stumbaugh,

Interesting prices on that listing.
But doesn't the cost to then ship it to the LA area make it ultimately competetive with prices locally if you go and pick it up out here yourself?
I am thinking of doing a replacement/swap myself, and appreciate the input!
Thanx.

I have a close friend who works for a GM dealer and another good friend who is a GM shop foreman. Both owe me favors and both have never been able to get me a motor for the same price. Can't say that someone else can't, but they could not. I've heard that if the dealer buys a lot of them, they can get a better price vs. buying just one. Scoggin Dickey buys a crapload of them.

Plus, the tax in CA is about half of what shipping would be, you pay no tax on mail order but have to at the dealer.

Thanks for the crate motor link. Ordered one up this morning. Only $255 to ship. Have your dealt with any transmisson shops locally? Need someone to go thru my T-350.

Mike

Bear,

Yea, at 8.25 percent? Here in LA, it adds up quick!

I hear it's less in other parts of CA.

Are you in So Cal? Maybe there is a local source we can find as there are lots of gearheads here.

Mike, No I have not but I did make friends with the local Snap-On guy and he seems to know everyone. Got me a great hookup with a tow truck guy that worked out great and saved me some money. I'll ask him, he's been the area for ever. Mark or Wasabi might know one too.

Stumbaugh,

Yep, So. Cal.
Wasabi Art knows the truck.
Not gonna even start anything till Spring and no injected stuff for this one.
67LPB has currently old-style 350 w/THM350 or 400.
No cancer, but muchas years of hard use.

Did you buy the truck from Tan?

Wow, there a lot of 45 owners right here in Socal.

I thought so.

I was going to take a look at that truck but my kid broke his collar bone the day I was going to go see it. By the time I called Poe back it had been sold.

Small world

My son loves to watch this cartoon and on the credit's is Poe Tan, when I talked to him he told me that he was an animator.

I would have bought that truck, had some wear and tear but looked really solid.

Nice 45! I was checking out Bob's 45 this weekend and he told me you picked up a real nice one. Indeed you did! I still remember the custom extended cab you were building from scratch in your basement. If you can't find a stock bed a custom tray back would look real nice and be functional for the Home Depot runs. Looking forward to following your restification.

Thanks John. How's Sean's old Cruiser doing? I think he would freak if he saw it now, he'd be psyched. Are you still building that 55 tow rig?

Hey Stumbaugh, Very nice truck! And, I don't think 8k is too much for what I see in the pictures. That seems like a good price, especially for one that can be driven home.

I'm afraid to know what I'll have into mine when I can finally drive it. And that won't be anytime soon. :frown:
