Falken A/T4W?!

I had in my mind I would be trying the KO3s next. Now things get interesting with the release of the Falken A/T4Ws!!

I liked my AT3Ws enough that even that is still very high on my list. Now they're suggesting AT4Ws has better durability, comfort, towing stability, on-road handling, and treadlife.

  • Better Towing Performance: Falken has been hard at work engineering the AT4W to be a stronger, tougher tire than the AT3W, especially when it comes to towing. The AT4W offers increased tread rigidity and some new LT-rated heavy duty tire sizes, both of which help you tow greater amounts of weight much more efficiently than with previous Falken tires.
  • Longer Lasting On-Road Comfort and Traction: The AT4W boasts an all-new rubber compound than was seen on the AT3W, which Falken promises will increase the comfort of your ride on the pavement.
  • Better Off-Road Capability and Durability: A crucial design element to the AT4W is its staggered shoulder blocks, which should give you a boost when you need added traction in rougher patches off the trail.
  • Increased Sidewall Protection: The Wildpeak AT4W isn't gonna back down from anything, and it proves that with three-ply DURASPEC sidewall technology on select tire sizes. With all these new improvements coming together on one tire, it should be interesting to see how all this works together to improve traction and durability.

I was just reading about them earlier today. My KO2s are due to be replaced. I may just go with another set of KO2s since there is no ETA on the KO3 release in broad market sizing. And the Falken is ~12% heavier than the KO2 in 285/75-17. Tough call since the Falken is a fantastic tire.

I’ve become a fan of the RT01. Granted I only have a few thousand miles on mine. Available in 35x11.5 for fools like me.

A great option for the more aggressive off-road users.

This is how Falken compares them by its own ratings.

Nice comparison chart

We’re supposed to get 10” of snow on Friday so I’ll weigh in after that. They are noisier than my Nitto Ridge Grapplers so I’m sure they are louder than the ATW. Been happy with dry and wet handling so far. My mileage is better than with the Nittos, oddly enough, even though I went UP an inch.

"...proprietary 3-ply DURASPEC Sidewall Technology on select sizes"

How does a buyer know which sizes have the 3-ply sidewall?? Their website and PDF do not say.

Loving the sound of a 285/70/18 in load range C. Looks like that may be my next tire!

Thanks for the info...I'm due for a new set and was considering KO's again but this has me thinking. I have a set of mint RW's I want to switch out. Hope they offer the 285/70/17

That's one of the most popular 17" rim tire sizes around. Nearly 100% chance it'll be one of the first sizes released. P metric, LT Load Range C, and LT Load Range E all listed in the size chart.

In 2 years when I need tires again, there are a lot of new promising choices coming out...

I am going to be replacing my 275/65/20's with 285/75/17's it looks like and since I have loved my AT3W's, I am looking forward to the AT4W's.

I like what i am seeing in this new Falken!! Seems like a great tire…checks a lot of the boxes for AT shoppers. But I have two issues:

1. 3-ply sidewall is only in “some” sizes….how the heck does a consumer know when it comes time to order??

2. Heavier than other ATs just like AT3W was. Why?! Last time, it was bc they used cheap heavy steel plies instead of high-tensile steel plies that most other OEMs use. Are they still doing that with AT4W?!

Re #1, if there’s not yet a chart on their website I expect there will be one eventually. Falken has a similar comment about the RT01 which only applied to some tire sizes, but they do note it on the website.

Maybe i missed it somewhere…but they have PDF you can download on the site…i don’t see any notation.

That's not why.

Falken's have always run closer to true size with more rubber in terms of tread depths at 13-19 / 32s. Versus something like the KO2s (can't find listed info for KO3s yet) that runs 13-15 /32s. Or Toyo at 12.7-17 / 32s.

When it comes to tires, sometimes getting less in overall size and rubber is not such a good trade. I'll say I miss how aggressive and deep the treads were on the A/T3Ws versus the Toyos I switch to.

More depth has not resulted in longer tread life…at least on AT3W. So this calls into question the rubber compound Falken is using.
