Building a 2fe with a SM420 to a Marlin ToyBox to a FJ62 split case. It's going into my 40, with 4.10 diffs.

My first question is high subjective I know; 2.28 (1.47:1) or 4.70 (3.03:1) gears. Who's running what what do ya like and what do ya dislike 'bout the setup? Money wise the 2.28 looks pretty good and I've talked with a couple folks that say the 4.7 gear are too low and they never use them.

Is anyone running a vacuum split case in a 40? Will it fit the frame rails with the vacuum box? Is there a way to remove it to go manual shift?

May not be as hardcore tech as some on here and if it needs moved that's cool.

Thanks,

62 t-case does not fit in an 80 series frame if that helps at all ;)

I had to remove the vac shifter and turn it into a manual...Not alll that hard Ill post pics when I find the right seal...

P.S. go for the 4.7

4.7 and keep the stock LC 4 speed tranny..

I have the 420/2.3/2.3..

It is stupid low (200:1) and I only use it when I have some serious crawling to do...

The 420 sucks as a shifting tranny. Wish I had the stocker back right now..

Therein lies my problem.... I have 2 good 420's at least one more in parts and zero LC 4 spds.

Maybe I can swap an sm420/3 spd with someone wanting to upgrade their 60.....

Im sure you could swap someone for a stock 4 speed... You can find em for 50 to 75 bucks a pop also.

Ive got a 4 speed hanging around mike, Shifted Great, come get it, lol

I really miss the gearing of the stock 4 speed compared to my 700r4, the 4 speed had just the right ratios for getting to the trail and back

H42-4.7-Split case would be the best setup, IMHO.

Now, if therw as only an easy way to get the R151 from a minitruck mounted up behind a 2F...

Read that second thread again. He just posted, it was a 83 split case, not a vacuum shift. You will probably have to figure out that front seal like lowtide's been talking about if you convert the case you have.

I run the 2.28 in my toybox with the stock 4 speed and split case and its about right for what I am doing... but then again this is in a wagon and it doesnt see hardcore crawling although its seen its share of trails so far. If you plan on going hardcore go with the 4.7 otherwise 2.28 will be plenty.
