Ok hello all..I see there are a few clutch threads on here...My problem is this...I have an 85 4wd truck...Met a guy on craigs list to put my rebuilt shortblock in...time went on..finally after many trips...the guy got the motor in..While doing swap..i decided to put new clutch in..Clutch kit ran me about 225 after shipping...i purchased from performance shop...Motor is in...start it up..sounds pretty good..except carb is way wacked out..get to that later)...Start truck up..try to drive it...It will not shift..Have to hold it down into first and reverse is worse(grinding awfull noises...Near imposible to drive(mechanic did..But he will not return my calls.....SO when i turn motor off...It shifts like butter...Start it up..and it will not go into gear..I am stuck with a truck i may have to tow to garage..Or figure this out myself...After i had a few words on the phone...the kid came back and bled the line, all that...he said somthing about the slave may not be matching up with new clutch.?..I am looking for help...Any ideas?...Regards...C

Since this mechanic i hired will not return my call(total goober)...I have no way of verifying anything...as i do not know how...nor do i have the tools(jacks)..So i am stuck as to what to do..Tow to shop...or go rent jacks and hunt and peck my way through?

No jacks needed. The slave is on the pass side of the transmission bell housing. Get a friend to pump the clutch pedal while you look at the slave to see if it's moving the clutch arm (arm goes into the trans). It should move an inch or so.

Thank you jerod,...The mechanic the other day i believe did that as he had me pump the clutch..and mumbled something about slave not pushing forks properly? ..But he is no where to be found! grrr..I reckon in the shop it goes..Hopefully it will be something minor like that..After this experience i need to put it in the hands of a pro...Or at least a person who acts professional..I am just trying to save quan..which i do not have much of.

clutch hydraulics (bad or not adjusted), clutch disc in backwards, locktite on the flywheel/disc (yes this WILL stop the clutch from spinning) bad pilot bearing, etc etc.

Ok...I think replacing master and slave would be the way to go..Gonna have a guy come by and look at it tonight...save a little on labor if i can...as i have other issues with this truck as well..My wire harness issue...and carb are my next step...But i NEED this clutch problem fixed now.

Ok i am a total goob when it comes to mechanics... so here goes...I put the slave in..It seemed easy..and was not that bad..i got it in..all the fluid drained out..So my question is this..Is the only way i will know if this solved my broblem is to have a vacume pump...Pump the clutch etc??..I did start the truck up and try to shift...It was worse if not the same....Any advice..Thanx..C

One more thing!...The guy who put the motor in was having a real time lining it up(like it was a two person job)..He did by his self did not want my help...I am wondering if by forcing it in place he may have messed up the pilot bearing?..The truck was not on level ground and he was trying to jimmy it in place with a few jacks and his hoist.

you need to find a good mechanic or buy some tools. it is possible but that will not make your truck not shift it will make your input shaft go bad over time. and also i would suggest you get a manual and read it. there is a type of sense that people have like common sense but it is a mechanical sense. if you have it you have it if you do not than i would search out a good mechanic. the questions you have only you can answer. from my perspective you did not have a hole lot of faith in the person you chose to do this work. if your gut said no than you should have said no. good luck!!! also you have to bleed the slave like you would bleed your brakes.

Still truck is undriveable

Hi all...I put slave in...was pretty easy peasy...Had a dude come by and bleed...He did not have vacume..Just did it by hand!...The only way i can get the truck to shift is to pump hard in between shifts(any gear)..So i am stumped?...Could it just need more bleeding with vacume perhaps?...Any tips?...Thank you!..C

Sounds like it isn't fully bleed.

Carb

Ok i have my clutch solved..I had new master put in as well...Now they tell me my carb needs rebuild...which i was afraid of...What is the best way to go...and most cost effective?...I have heard many toyota guys talk of webbers?...I have no idea how much quan i have to shell out for rebiult carb....so any feedback guys would be nice!...Thank you..C
