Hello everyone!

I just fell into ownership of a BJ-40 that was brought up from Costa Rica a couple years ago. Got it back home, and now I'm starting to work on it. I've got a lot of work ahead, but this community looks great for exactly that sort of thing. I'm not too auto-mechanically inclined, but I think this is going to be a fun first project. Thanks in advance for everyone who ends up helping me out!

Don't ignore the 40 forum, lots of diesel information there too and much more information on the rest of your rig. Say hello over there too.

The diesels are great trucks, I have a 3B in mine.

Good luck on your build. I've got one from Costa Rica myself. Be aware that South American trucks have a lot of differences other than just the engine. Be careful going by the year when ordering parts.
And post up some photos!

Just browsing some, I see that ordering parts from the local "parts zone" wont really be an option. The guy who had the cruiser before me explained his difficulty getting parts for it. I assumed it has something to do with the fact he lived in nowhere Wyoming.

Welcome to the club!

First you need the FSM's. Here are 3 download links.
These are BIG pdf files so sit back and have a beer.

98154 Chassis & Body FJ, BJ, HJ, 1975 - 1980
98154 chassis-body '75-'80.pdf

Depending on the year you'll need one of these or both.

98082 B engine 1973 - 1977
98082 B engine 197X.pdf

98260 B 2B engine 1977 - 1980

Thanks for that! I was browsing for the manuals on Amazon as I opened up this thread. Glad I read this before I added the manual to my cart. Saves me a little $$$ :D

Congrats. Its always good to get some more diesel 40 guys on here. I just bought a bj42 myself: My 1981 BJ42.

Welcome to the addiction. I have a bj40 b diesel here in Costa Rica. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions. Been rebuilding mine for about a year and these CR cruisers can vary a bit from other markets.

Just got a Costa Rica bj40, '78. Any suggestion on fluids for transmission and transfer case? Thanks for your help

We don't have much of a variety when it comes to the fluids. I know some say use a heavier weight fluid for these old LC's from Central America.
Also check your IP oil as well. Not sure if you have a pump or you manually fill and change like many from Costa Rica.

Cheap store brand SAE90 gear oil is what I used.

what's my ip oil?

The ip uses the same engine oil. Either there is a pump that circulates the oil from the engine to the ip or like many I have seen in Costa Rica you have to fill with 130 cc engine oil. You need to change this oil when you do the engage oil service.
If you can take a photo of your ip we can go from there.
