Hello All

Let me introduce myself first, Artur Da Silva, portuguese expat in Dakar, Senegal (West Africa) and trying to recover a death LJ71 from 1991

A friend/colleague of mine purchased a few months ago the vehicule and despite me and some others suggested he was being stolen he got it......long story short....engine died........suspect that the lower engine went to where engines go when they pass away......

I drive (or use to....) drive the truck as a daily driver....simply love the car......the looks, the drive....just awesome.....and as my friend is never here (he's one of the pilots of an aircraft I maintain....as a technician...) it is (or it was...) "my car"......

Need help, tips, etc to recover the engine.....I believe I can do everything with the engine installed but need to get some expertise......it's a 2LT (old version), turbo has some oil leaking through the shaft (very big leak...) and I'm still disassembling to see if only the crankshaft has problem or if I need to get piston and all the crap that goes with it.....

All help is appreciated...

Thanks

Artur Da Silva

Thanks Joe

Already been searching down there.......found a very cheap sort of rebuilding kit.....on another website......but a bit scared that they mention a Celica and a Crown Ford for the engine......

FRiday Parts

This one from Ebay seems more legit...

Ebay

Thanks

Artur

If that car was imported from Europe , which is mostly likely , the motor could be a VM motor that Toyota was using in order to avoid some quotas and limits in importing those cars .
Some were also build in Portugal .
Notoriously that motor was a crappy motor , if you can change it with a petrol or a more modern motor .
You should be able to find tons of HZ1 , where you live .
Ideal would be motor and gearbox .

Hello Renago

Ouch...that hurts.......o_O

Just kidding....never heard that we use to make VM engines in Portugal, however I do agree with you concerning the reliability of some 2LT engines......not all, just some....and not event talking VM.....

As for the HZ1, do you have some sort of experience on this change over?? Will it be a straight (or close to) swap?? LJ71 are tinny compared to the beasts that use to have the HZ1...probably shafts needs to be also replaced due to the reduced distance to axles compared to HDJ and so on.......Looking forward to hear some voices around this.....will check if I can get a HZ1 cheap.........well, nothing is cheap here anyhow but if I can get extra HP for the same money I'm all in.....

Thanks

Artur

You could also try to find a 3L donor engine from a hilux if a replacement 2LT is hard to get

Sorry , I made myself not so clear , I meant that toyota were building some series of LJ 70 in Portugal .
VM motors were always made in Italy.
Ref. Swapping in a HZ1 in an LJ is possible , if you look in the 70 forum , I am sure you can find it .
Easy ? Depends on many factors , a viable parts , labor ,time money .

1991 will be the 2LT-II (unless someone swapped in an older 2LT at some point).

What symptoms did it have before dying?

There are two things I've seen take out bottom ends on these. One, people let water sit in the bores and rust them after the head cracks. This will cause lots of blow-by and loss of compression. Two, people use the wrong thickness head gasket when putting a new cylinder head on. This causes the valves to hit the pistons and eventually takes out the big end rod bearings.

The 2LT-II is actually a fine engine IMHO. Especially when fitted with the second generation 2LT-II/2LTE/3L cylinder head from toyota. They seem to be quite improved over the originals. Adding a good front mount intercooler and running around 17-20 psi makes them run cooler and much stronger.

I've had my 2LTE completely apart. Easy to work on; and quite stout bottom ends IMHO. 2LTE semi-rebuild

If you're looking at diesel engine swaps, I recommend the Toyota B series. 3B/13BT/14BT/15BFT. Four cylinder's fit without swapping the front end.

If you want gasoline, look at the Toyota 5VZFE or 1UZFE.
