NEED HELP. Re-keying without factory door cylinders

Hey guys,

I have a 88 fj62 and my key for the ignition is original, however the PO replaced the door cylinders in the front with solex locks. I don't have the ability to get the key code from the cylinders and I tried Toyota directly but no luck because the key code for my VIN is too old and not in their system. Any ideas on how to get factory door locks and have them match my key and or find out what my key code is so I can make another? My key unfortunately is super run down and so im hoping I can figure out the key code and make it sharp again. Any and all help appreciated.

Since the doors are already keyed differently are you sure you don’t just want to replace the ignition lock cylinder? Then you’ll know the lock code, will have two new keys, and also won’t have a worn lock cylinder that may not work well with a freshly cut key.

Everything but the rear gate lift lock. Those are not re-key-able.

If the OP has the circular Solex lock, it's obviously a way different blank.

I personally would look for someone parting a complete used set, including the rear lift gate and have them cleaned and re-pinned and a few keys cut.

Is there no way to get the key code off the ignition cylinder or based on the key itself?

Would really like to try and stick with the original set up but it doesn't sound like that'll be possible?

You can learn to use a Lishi tool to decode the lock or have a locksmith do it. How hard that is will depend on how worn the lock cylinder is.

Remove the Ignition cyl lock and take it to a good old-skool locksmith and see what they can do.

The only way I know of getting the key code is off the passenger side lock or from the dealer with a VIN, but people have said the dealer route is difficult because of the possibility of theft and liability. A locksmith may have access to the same database.

i had a similar situation when i bought mine. My door keys were different than my ignition. I just popped my ignition barrel out and took it to a good locksmith and had him rekey the ignition cyl to match the key of the door locks. I then ordered a bunch of OEM key blanks and had the same locksmith cut OEM toyota keys out of the old keys that were some random brand like ilco or whatever. Now i still have oem keys, but everything works off one key. Also dont let anyone tell you an aftermarket ignition cyl cant be rekeyed. I had the opposite of what you have. Aftermarket iginition cyl, and oem door locks. Everything worked. Just have to find a good locksmith
