Ok here's the story : driving home from work I got the smell of burning oil comming into the cab maybe onto exhuast manifold. Woke up in the morning to move the 4runner few feet into the drive way to degrease some of that oil i saw on the drivers side of the block. Sprayed degreaser and wash it off with a hose very gently , I did not want to get water every where or in critcal areas. After i was done i started the truck and it sounded like a diesel like lot of loud vavletrain noise. I said OMG so thinkin i got water in the engine some how I quickly changed oil(seemed good not grey . I check the distributor cap seemed dry inside. What can this be did i throw the timing off? I kind of sprayed water near the distributor and power steering pump gently. I had also shut dow quickly after i heard the noise. Any leads on what i can check next?

The only silly part is ........you just bought it a month ago........stick to landcruisers

It doesn't take much water in the dist to cause all sorts of issues... I'd pull the cap and let a hair dryer run down there for a bit, then hit it with some WD40.

The water didn't change the valve clearances, and you didn't stick it in the intake and end up bending a rod.... It has to be ignition related...

yes i think you right it's ignition related. I pulled the cap , looked dry. I will trouble shoot in AM hopefully everying dried up.

If I were you I would take all the intake ducts off and dry them as well.

I bet you got water in the intake/intake ducts as well.

Dry and dry. Leave hood up if you can.

Sounds simple to me. No worries.

trouble shoot

did the timing was way off 0 deg set it to 5 deg the idle smooth out and it the noise got fast as it went . Loud knocking noise as it idled and when accelerator press loud knocking noise got louder. Sound like something went on the bottom end. Pulled the vavle cover off everything looked good. I guess its time for a new engine or sell this thing.

i pulled intake ducts the were dry , I did not spray no where near. I didnt want to spray the whole engine. I was careful where i sprayed. just on the side of the exhuast side of block

bummer man.... the engine didn't see any high revving lately did it?
yes it did previous nite only up to 4000. Thats when it started. Smelled oil hitting exhaust manifold saw mild splash marks of oil in engine bay ,then washed it off ---all coincidental? its funny u aked that.. .i think i toasted the motor

dude your motor is fine. 4k is mild in the spectrum of destroying a 22 re. I think 6k is doing some damage, but only just. It sounds like a desil at low rpm because your only running on 3 cylinders. (am very familiar with this sound) get an inline spark plug tester and make sure all of the plugs are firing. Then check the connectors for your fuel injectors. Those will be a bitch. you may have to take part of the plenum apart to get at them so only do this stuff when all else fails.

There is a neat little diagram with photos in the back of a regular hayns or chiltons manual that shows you how to inspect a spark plug and what a lean or rich burning plug will look like. it helps to know this stuff and can narrow down your search. but don't rely on it.

A not so cool way of figuring out which cylinder it may be is to just start pulling spark plug wires one by one, and if you pull one off and there is no substantial change in idling condition youve found it. watch out its possible, but not probable, that you can get zapped if you ground yourself while doing this. and obviously only do this after your inline tester has told you its not an ignition issue.

good luck man.

thanks

thanks to all that replied. I spoke to the guy i bought the truck from and said same thin happened to him. I over came the terrible noise and after awhile of motor heating up it dissappeared. Lesson learned don't wash the motor!!!! and i did carefully. These are delicate motors it seems, not like the 2f cruisers engines im use to.---thanks again You guys saved me $$3000 when i asked a shop about a rebuild---lol

These are not delicate motors. I've washed mine and several others many times. I've driven thru water that was up to the headlights with no issues. You must have a connector that is leaking and allowed water inside.

The reason I asked about high RPMs is that it will stretch the connecting rod bearing cap bolts, and the nuts will fall off and you'll have a thrown rod...

but 4K isn't high, I run mine to 5k a couple times a month.... Just to remind it who's boss!

now that i washed the oil off it is comming back, and plumme of smoke as oil hits the exhaust manifold and loosing oil as well. . Any common leaks on 22re? its near or under the dizzy all on that corner but nothing in the front of motor.

Bad O ring on the dist maybe? Could be time for a valve cover gasket... or time to tighten it down...
valve cover gasket good, no oil comming from the top. If it is the oring can i just pull distributor out? or is there an oil pump shaft that will fall into the block?
