Yes and then the engine died. Am I just having bad luck here or what ? Started the engine back up and pressure seems to be there, but does slowly decreases.

Engine now has a knock. Am I looking at an engine rebuild ?

I think this is very bad news. I would not run the engine another second save even more damage. You really need to find someone you trust to look at it and tell you what has happened. A good engine mechanic should be able to tell you where the knock is coming from but if its a rod bearing then yes, its going to need to come out and likely be rebuilt.

Also, go to www.car-part.com and search Southeast Region for engines for a 1996 LC or LX. There are several a day's drive from you. Depending on your budget and time constraints, a complete engine swap might be an option.

darn, you *should* have brought donuts to the techs... :frown:

did you check the oil level...?

Yea , the oil level was fine, all was well and running fine with the engine. I did have a small oil leak some where under at the lower end that maybe was dripping on the crank pulley ?? I have had this small drip for some time and from reading here never considered it a problem or anything. Other than that everything was fine.

Now what should I do ? I do have it over a local shop here Urban Land Cruisers and they are checking it out. This is not the X-mas gift -- I had planned on getting with only 126,000 miles on her.

The loss of power steering assist is consistant with the oil pump drive gear slipping on the crank since that gear drives both the oil pump and the power steering pump. I would start by confirming that this is the cause. If it is, I would fix that and then see if the engine still rattles. If it does, it is tear-down time.

This is the reason for the 304 lb-ft torque requirement for the crank pulley bolt. The oil pump drive gear is "clamped" by the pulley, not keyed to the crank.

well, at least Urban is a good shop from what I read here, so you may hear the real story now...

Reading a thread like this makes me feel really blessed.

Fuel - best to you on this trial. Hang in there, Urban will get you the straight scoop.

Thanks guys, maybe there is some good somewhere in this... I dont know what it is yet but I keep trying to search for it on the forum. who knows where this will lead ...

Keep us posted.
Good Luck,
Sean

Well, they have hooked up to the on board computer and no codes came back.? Could my knock now be a Knock sensor problem ? I think they are going to do a compression test to see if anything is messed up in the engine. Other than that maybe / hopefully I dont have to rebuild. then I can get the first problem fixed and have a merry xmass and long running cruiser.

The knock sensors "sense" knocks and pull spark lead out when the engine is under a load. If you are tapping away all the time it is a mechanical problem. "Codes" relate to electrical problems.

Well , I took it over there and they have driven it once, I think  and hooked up the computer code reader to see if the engine through any codes. It came back with nothing. They have a full shop right now and I was getting the feeling that it was going to be a while before they could really look at so I went and got it. Its crazy because the truck drives fine, it just has this dam knock. I have tryed to search and read lot on the subject. Nothing I have found sounds good. I think I am going to try to pull the spark plugs and see if any are fouled up. Then , I am going to get a compression test done and post the results back. Other than that I am just wishing and hoping that it is something other than engine rebuild time. So I am still waiting to find out something more. I will post up with what ever I do find.

Definitely keep everyone updated. Did you ever hear anything before you brought it to the toyota dealer?

Well , I got another shop to look at it and they don’t think it is a knock sound at all more like mechanical engine sound. They think it is more likely a valve adjustment issue or the timing chain making noise hitting something. I don’t know these guys seemed like they knew what to listen for. They broke out the long screw driver and put their ear on it and checked all around. They thought I should be OK driving it around until it gets louder or something else happens. They think it is more of an annoyance than a real engine problem.

I don’t know what to make of this ? I think I am going to drive it around and see how it goes.
