Nails on Trails

This is infuriating! The little side spur on Rampart Range Road with the moguls, about 1/3 of the way to WP, that some call the "shakedown moguls", was covered in dozens of nails. There's a pile of old, broken pallets off to the right, and perhaps the nails came from them, but that just begs the question: what kind of f---ing a--hole dumps pallets on a trail?!?

Anyway, we're going to go back with a magnet sweeper to get whatever we may have missed, and clean up all the pallets. I'll bump this thread with a date for anyone who'd like to join us.

Someone prob had a camp fire using pallets . Happens all the time.. I picked up 4 once on eagle rock in a brand new 42 inch sitckey maxxis trep. I hate to say this... But I'm over cleaning public lands anywhere on the frt range . Ive gone out with groups twice and done gold camp road . Before we even came down ,there was new trash on the road . That's a county road we pay taxes on they need to maintain it or hire Nonprofits to do it for them. If I'm in a OHV that requires a permit again a tax they labeled a fee to use the trail and pay for maintenance of it (but we have to clean it and maintain it ?) . I don't add to the mess but I wont stop my truck or bend over to pick something up any longer. I can't stand even driving rampart or gold camp The trash and off trail damage disgusts me to the point it takes the pleasure out of being off road.

With out turning this into a political rant .The blame lays on the government. They need to spend taxes dollars and revenue collected (fines ) where it should be spent. In Fla there is a crystal clear spring feed river called rainbow river. you weren't allowed to have cans glass or anything disposable . Just as the trails here . There was a certain group who just didn't care .. FWC patrolled the river very heavy and fined them $150 to $300. FWC used that money for clean up Twice a year they covered all of our expenses to bring a group of divers who volunteered their time for a week and we picked up everything on the bottom . In return we got 1 week a year where they closed off the head springs (before it because a state park) and allowed us to dive the restricted areas. We all got our boat registration fees waived for any years we dove . If you dove 5 yrs in a row your hunting and fishing license fees were waived for every year you dove. . Plus we got free entrance and air for any state run spring or dive shop.. In return they got a group of guys and a few gals who cared about the land wand water. Not only did they Preserve the river with this program They showed those who where willing to help they were willing to do what ever it took and reward those who helped to keep it clean and open . After years this the river had the reputation.. If you litter you will get caught and pay a heavy fine. I think the state took over the whole river about 10 years ago an ended that program from what I have heard the river looks like crap they still write the heavy fines but the money goes else where and it shows. I guess the point to this log post is ...... The people like me would prob feel different if we saw our tax (fees) used for what we paid them for. And saw our government Fed, State, county, city.. enforce the littler laws and send a message.

I like to frequent the shakedown moguls. Tires are expensive. The government isn't sending a crew. I'll take care of it myself.

Goslow, brand-new 'mud member Jeeves, and I will be meeting at the Sinclair gas station located at 201 Manitou Ave, Manitou Springs, CO 80829, at 10:30am this Sunday, July 12, to go and clean up nails and pallets. Anyone who would like to join is welcome. This is a CLC Community Service outing, so we will require liability waivers for all participants (one waiver on file covers you permanently).

We will have a metal detector, two magnet sweepers, and a pickup truck. I'd recommend bringing work gloves and plenty of water, sunscreen, etc., in addition to any other tools you think might be helpful, and your off-roading gear, inc. GMRS radios. We will be at the Shakedown Moguls, so this will also be an ideal time to do any suspension testing.

Three of us went to clean up today. It was relatively low-key, and it was much cooler up there than it is down here. We found a crapload more nails (and some trash)!

We also cleaned up all the fence panels (not pallets, like we thought) and scraps. Dirtbags were clearly burning these for campfires.

This is the spot where all the wood was (right before the moguls).

The big mystery was at the muster point. WHAT DOES THIS EVEN MEAN?!?
