Mysterious noise

Thanks for posting the videos! I'm experiencing those exact sounds/symptoms. What ended up being wrong with your drive shaft? Was it just U-joints?

He kinda said yes......
@wildwilly

So the noise in the video completely dissapeared with removing the rear driveshaft and droving using only the front ds with the CDL and fused pulled.

We bought a spider, buy when trying to install it it would not go in. Upon measuring the u joint it was not symmetrical. Maybe from ering too hard or maybe this was the problem.

We bought a used ds off ebay for 110 w shipping. After installing it, we started hearing and feeling an inconsistent vibration mostly between 40-60mph while deccelerating. Not too noticable, but there. So unfortunately the issue is not resolved, but we've been driving it like usual. We've been looking into aligning or balancing the ds, but dont know that we can do much more ourselves.

Check your phasing on your new DS. It may NOT be correct.

I suck at explaining this.

Google "driveshaft phasing" and watch the YouTube video.

The LC typically have the front DS OUT of phase and the REAR DS IN phase. However, you can "play" with it to try and fix vibrations that can arise from lifts.

Only do 90 degree phase changes though. Don;t do ONE spline different or you WILL have a vibration.

You pull the yoke off the driveshaft and rotate 90 degrees to where it was.

Ok I'm gonna get on that thanks.

I want to mention when i was reinstalling the ds i had a tough time lining up the bolts and i did a combination of trying to maually spin the center and rear diff as well as roll the truck back slightly in neutral. I used the metal that was slightly faded or just slightly differnt color to make sure the ds went on, on each end the same way.

If it helps anyone who has the same rattle sound in the OP's video, my issue turned out to be something inside the driveshaft, not U-joints. $400 for a new front DS, $40 in nuts & bolts (wow), some time to cut the rusty bolts freeing the DS, and the gremlins are finally gone.

Turns out the rear driveshaft was 90 degrees out of phase. Upon putting the ds in phase, the vibration stopped. It runs smooth af. Thank you very much for the suggestion. This was the second big issue with our truck that we solved with the help of this forum. Cheers!
